Sell Me a Chip

I am quite tempted to get one of the miracle Tbreds for less than 90$ (u know the 1700+ or the 2100+) but then part of me hesitates b/c finding one of those miracle chips can truly be a long trial and tribulation. Let's say that i had the money for a GB of Corsair twinMX 3200LL...the best stuff on earth some might say ..lol (my pc is long overdue for an upgrade)...

and i was willing to spend upwards of 300-350ish on a processor... (w/ artic silver III and HSF)
And the asus a7n8x of course (for AMD)...

No idea what mobo for an intel...

now i would like to run the ram @ 200 mhz and beyond..preferably to 230 if it can hack it (which it *should*)..i would prefer aggressive timings (2-2-2-6) over pure speed however....

Talk to me. What do i get. Do i get a barton 2500+, Barton 2800+ (leaning towards this ONE) a barton 3000+ (are they good overclockers?)...a 2.4ghz P4? on the 800 mhz bus?...etc...

I have remained on the fringe but i do want a good discussion of pros vs. cons...also keep in mind that i would like the biggest bang for the buck even w/out an overclock (i.e. assume the overclock will only be moderate)

i would either go 1700+ or 2500+ because its cost efficent. you'll save a bundle over a p4 setup. as for the twinMXLL, i dont know if you can get to 230 Mhz on it, my experice with XMS it that it gets up to 225 most of the time.

I found another thread in here about the 2500 v the 2800
everyone seems to say 2500+ but i had this question :


w/ corsair twin mx 3200 (on 2-2-2-6) could i take the 2500 to a 400 mhz bus w/out detriment (even if this means bringing down the multiplier)

sometimes running a 333mhz chip @ 400mhz is actually detrimental. what are ppl's take on this. Does the barton 2500+ play nice @ 200 and beyond? i.e. is there a performance hit or NOt MUCh of an improvement?

IF so what should i look out for. i.e. settings to make the fsb/ram/proc. play nice. thanks all!

2500+ over 2800+ cuz the 2500+ is below $100 and can OC up to and past "3200+" levels. a lot of people here got there 2500+ to run smoothly @ 200*11 (2200 Mhz) and above

And of course i will ask for help as i put it piece by piece together so i make sure i dont screw up! not that there is much to..but...
