self defense... what do you think?

Most self defense classes I've heard about don't really show you enough to stop an extremely motivated attacker. What has been your experience? I know that there are forms that will permanently stop an attacker if needed. What forms do you like and why?

Most attackers will pick what they think is an easy target. If you look like an easy target chances are the attacker is larger and stronger. The only way to counter this in terms of unarmed combat would be a crapload of training. If you are a 140 lb woman and a 220 pound guy is intent on raping you there really isn't much a weekend seminar on defensive training is going to do.

See my sig.
I'll be getting the marine form of martial arts training... the best moves from most forms of the arts all lumped into 1 big form.
But I won't be learning how to do a flip :(

Those self defense courses arent worth crap. If someone gets you on the ground or attacks you just poke their damn eye out. No one can stand getting jabbed in the eye. Get mean dammit, someone is trying to violate you!

Another vote here for the ubiquitous Colt .45 auto. Also, snapping someone's knee the opposite direction it was made to bend by using a quick flat foot kick works nicely.

Sad to say, but I agree with Skoorb.

Okay, it's nothing against Skoorb :), it's just that he's right about a very tragic thing.

I used to teach the occasional self-defense class. It was extremely frustrating because I knew that they weren't going to be able to really fight off a determined attacker. The most I could hope for was to give them some options to get lucky, teach them how not to get into a bad situation, and possibly buy them enough time to let help arrive. But you could tell the women in the class who had been attacked and who hadn't. The ones that had been attacked had a haunted look in their eyes, but when I suggest ripping a guy's balls off with the teeth, they were the ones to get a gleam in the eye while the others cringed and swore they never could.

the weekend clinics on self-defense are just that; you learn enough to at least give you a better chance at coming out unhurt against an attack. skoorb has it right on. the larger problem is that now people realize there's $ to be made in self-defense & martial arts, the scammers are coming out. a weekend long clinic shouldn't cost more than $100, if that much.

A .40S&W, 9mm, or .45. Be sure you're using something like Hydra-Shok ammo. Kimber, Springfield, Glock, Wilson Combat...they all make good .45's. I can't recommend Colt anymore. They're not what they used to be. :(

Krav Maga. The IDF, CIA, FBI, and most Police Departments use Krav Maga. It's very efficient and it doesn't take YEARS of practice to learn. Take a look: Krav Maga Online

Oh, my personal favourite weapons: Glock 9mm (it's compact and reliable.. just not all that accurate from my experience), Walther PPK .380 (yes, the 007 bond gun.. it's a nice little pistol and women seem to enjoy carrying it as it is very compact), Sig-Sauer P239 (an excellent choice), and anything from HK is usually fabulous. Knives: Fred Carter Gigand Knives are made of -300 Degrees F. Super Cryo-Steel with Aircraft Aluminum handles and the Titan opening mechanism (translation: they are tougher than steel), SOG Knives are good, and Masters of Defense are also excellent (but expensive).

I did boxing while I was in high school and that teaches you a lot about movement and punching technique. I also second the recommendation of Krav Maga.

Violence is never the answer. If some people were attacking me, I think the best thing to do would be to negotiate with them...failing that, I'd give them half of the money in my wallet and hope they don't hit me in pursuit of the other half [/s]

Are you, by chance, the leader of a certain Western European country that rhymes with "pants"??

A wise man once said:

Violence is never the answer.
Violence is the question.
Yes is the answer.

Jiu Jitsu. It's not so good against multiple opponents, but if one opponent gets you to the ground you will feel comfortable there (That's where nearly ALL fights end up, whether you like it or not). Most likely, if you are female and attacked by a male he will be ttempting to get you to the ground anyway. Jiu Jitsu will teach you MANY ways of breaking (Yes, I mean bones) your opponent so you can escape. If you still can't escape, Jiu Jitsu will teach you MANY ways of choking your opponent so they are sleeping when you are escaping. The multiple attacker thing sometimes scares people off, but the other point to the game is to control your opponent. If you do that, you should be able to keep them between you and the other attackers. Another thing... If there are two, you can many time TOTALLY take out the first in under ten seconds using Jiu Jitsu, then it's basically two one on one fights. Anyway, check it out.

takes too long to learn anything to be effective. I'd beg to differe that most fights go on the ground, but if they do they'll be multiple opponents. YOU know that in a fight its NEVER 1 v 1, more like 1 v 1 + back up. So going to ground to break one guys arm isn't going to deter another guy kicking you in the head.

I'd stay on feet and go for eyes, throat, bone breaks etc.

if you don't want to fight, run away fast. But you will come to fight. The class will at least make your aware of things. Study some form of MA and that'll help.

My roommate (girl) is in Jiu Jitsu. She's at practice all the GD time. She's about 5'7", 135. I'm 6'4" 190. I have so overwhelmingly little faith in her ability to get me to the ground, to break my bones, or to put me in some sort of Dragonfly Pincer move by which she can make me black out. That said, she sure thinks she can.

When we mock-wrestle, it's not a contest. She doesn't have the strength to match a would-be reasonable technique, and I don't know any girls (not to say there aren't any girls) who do. Other thing of note, and this is i'm sure her problem, is that she doesn't know how to throw a good punch, she's always trying to kick too high, and it would take two punches to flatten her (these are from watching practices) because she tries to block everything with exaggerated, sweeping arm movements. Again, I doubt that's universal in jiu jitsu, but she suffers from it.

IMHO with many girls in particular, they approach self-defense in a half-assed manner, looking for an aerobic workout. If you aren't going to commit to building strength and learning how to fight, there's no sense.

Browning 9mm is my choice, but I've been through the self-defense and handgun shpeel with various people so often that I'm going to shut my pie hole.

There are some majorly hot SIG 357 rounds out there now. Getting better. Magsafe makes a 2500fps round@770fpe. Gold Dot is there, but still no Hydra's, Golden Sabres, etc. yet :(

They are getting there. I think Federal will have the GS's availibile in a couple of months. Capacity of a .40 auto with more "oomph"

I'm with you mate. I think most girls aren't dedicated enough or trained enough to make use of it. Its just the sheer size different. If we were that smaller we'd get decked. Size matters in a fight. But if shes a top level JJ then she'll be able to handle herself. Most girls I've known can't through a punch; most guys I know can't throw a punch. But know my mates can as we trained and I've taught them. My girl can through a punch. She punches harder then all of my mates. Some that are 6" 190lbs. Shes 5"8 115lbs but she does Kung Fu and uses much better body mechanics then my friends. Kicking isn't good unless your good at it. Most people aren't. I'm good at kicking but have resevations with kicking in a fight due to the slipper surface. Not so great w hen you kick. Elbow to face or knee to body is MUCH better. The punch is very overated.........
