Self Defense Weapons for a girl?

My GF is moving to NJ and living alone. She is interested in getting something for self defense that she could carry in her purse.

I've been looking at www.self-defense-technology.com.

Anybody used this stuff before? Recommendations?

I was thinking some keychain mace and a high voltage stun gun.

A stun gun would require a permit to carry concealed weapons.

New Jersey is part of the northeastern bloc, and thus most means of self defense are illegal or severely restricted. Expect to be arrested if you actually use such a weapon for self defense. You might even be brought to trial.

Well I was going to say a Keltec P11, but the PRNJ pretty well stifles that.

Buy her some running shoes, AFAIK your options are pretty much nil.

Almost every state will bust you for having a concealed stun gun, or other self defense weapons, except pepper spray.

Most states will issue you a concealed weapon (or concealed handgun, depending on the state). PRNJ is notorious for not doing that. Right up there with DC.

Thank God for shall issue states.

35 of the 50 states have "shall-issue" concealed handgun laws. Few states have excessive laws or restrictions involved in purchasing a firearm, or transporting that firearm in your car.

California and the Northeast are the least self defense friendly places in the country, by far.

get a ccw and carry a saturday night special. then become a drunk and get into lots of barfights. then wake up in a hospital with 2 cops waiting to ask you questions. then spend 3 years 8 months and 12 days in hell. trust me, its fun.

Yes, take it from me. The Peoples Republic of New Jersey is very socialist (if not communist) when it comes to this sort of thing. The best advice I can give is to get her aSurefire and the 3/4oz pepper sprays. Thats about all that is legal here. As far as the Surefires go, in case you're not aware, they are EXTREMELY, INSANELY bright flashlights. They are designed for use by the police and the military for blinding ability. But luckily, they are still available to the general public - for now. Just wait until the whiny, liberal, anti-self defense wackos get a wiff of how bright they are and you'll here them saying they should be "regulated" because they hurt criminals eyes. But anyway, I'd say the G2 or 6P is a good choice, and go for the high output bulb if you are so inclined. If you have the $$$$ go for the M3 or M4. THe M6 can be seen from orbit actually. But don't buy them from Surefire.com themselves, they are a little pricey. The best I've seen is Productwizard and Tadgear and OneStopKnifeShop.com, hope this helps.

Lay off the crack pipe, dude.

what girl would want to carry a flashlight + mace in her purse ? Too much crap in there already... I agree it's the safest thing to do... but not the most practical. At least it's only 4 ounces... but I'd just go for the pepper spray keychain... been meaning to get one of those for Ms. Brooklyn over here...

Surefire flashlights are great because they are very compact. The Surefire G2/6P are 5" long and put out 65 lumens which is about 7-8 times what a 4 D cell Maglite puts out...

They literally stun you when they're shined at you. It's the craziest thing. And you can light up areas hundreds of yards away. They're freakin' cool. They screw you on the batteries though. $$$$.

EDIT: I meant to say, that won't really help someone who doesn't have a gun. THe idea is to stun them, identify them, and decide if they need to be shot. If you just stun them, all it'll do is piss them off.

Don't overlook self-defense classes. She can learn a lot even in a one day class, and it's fun. Just something about punching and kicking a guy in a padded suit to lighten your day! 😉 Check with local Women's Shelters, Parks Depts, Gun Shops, etc. Krav Maga (the Israeli techniques) would be a good place to start. Personally, I've got 10 years of SD training plus a CCW permit. I'm not going down without a fight (and I'm not looking for one either!). For long term study, jiujitsu looks fun -- and deadly.

Krav Maga NYC

I'm not affiliated with Krav Maga, I go to my local dojo, a blend of Karate/JiuJitsu/Aikido.

All depends on where you buy them. Do NOT buy them in a store, they are ridiculous. Order from some of the places I mentioned above. Or check out the forums at candlepowerforums.com, the dealer section has some WICKED deals sometimes....

As far as the stunning, thats what their for. It will give you a second or two to start running - or reach for something a little more painful.

I know about them, I have the G2Z Combatlight with the high output lamp for 120 lumen, and the 6P standard. I FRICKEN' LOVE THEM.

Most women are better suited using some sort of weapon. Most that get attacked are the small cute types or old ladies either of which even if they knew major self defense may have a hard time being strong enough to be effective to all but the most retarded of criminals.

When I used to be in martial arts the girls never won against the guys. They couldn't take the blows and they couldn't deliver hard enough counters.

Most guys that will try for an assault are sort of street wise, it may be helpful against a date rape though.

My brother's g/f is not frail but she also carries a HK Taurus.

A woman's best defense in my opinion is not to travel alone in secluded areas and to use a tazer/stun gun/pepper spray and running combination. Wise would be to have 911 programmed so it can be dialed easily while running and to give your location.
