Self Content Moderation

I think that in the forums this would be higly unwise, as we have problems already with trolls just posting things, let alone going around and possibly voting things down.

I believe it would be a great idea in the article and news comments sections though.

BTW hi Anand! been waiting since I joined to see you.

😛

But anyways I think hiring more mods would be suffcient

I don't really think this is a very good idea. It would be nice if we could have self moderation, but the current system works fine, and I find it hard to imagine a system that would not be extremely prone to abuse (including this one, the herd nature of OT is liable to lead to 'thread delete fests')

I would rather have a report post button that the mods monitored. Any voting system with some kind of automatic response will get abused. At least if the users abuse a report post button, you know who's doing it at a glance. Tracking what groups of people consistantly vote certian posts/posters down would be a PIA.

Voting systems = bad. A lot of posters have "fan clubs" that more or less bow to their will. And even worse, these same characters often have "enemies". I'm sure you see where that could lead.

I'm more for swelling the Moderator ranks, and adding an automated report handling system. Add a "report this post" link to each post, and if an OP is reported by, lets say 10% of the "view" count, it gets dropped into the moderation system. Once a mod takes a look, it can be marked as either "Justified complaint" or "Unjustified". The system would also keep track of how many times each user reported another user's post and it was marked as unjustified. Once this exceeds a certain number, that could the whiner/bully/whatever could be dealt with accordingly. Also, if a user exceeds a certain ratio of unjustified complaints vs. justified, autoban for making too much work for the mods.

And as anubis said, give us the ability to delete our own threads (or at least remove them from public view, the mods could still get at them if they wanted)

wow well said...I think that would be a major help!

btw I said hire more mods in the general sence (to previous poster on last page) everyone knows they are just slaves 😛

maybe this rankong system could only apply to the user and not everyone..that way we could do our own moderation, only for ourselves..you know like block certain users post etc..

I would avoid complex voting systems, bound to create more problems than it solves. Whats needed is a lot more mods, and those mods should only watch one area, that way the sections that have the most problems get the most mods. Also, the mods shouldn't be hidden, it should say forum mod right under their name.
The desire to create a democracy is understandable, but the problem is that people at the end of a keyboard are to disconnected from those they speak to. The insults that are common on these boards would never even be considered in a face to face conversation, they are tossed out here because there are no consequences. The only way to bring order to it all is by giving fair minded people the power to police the boards.
