How bout just an "alert" feature where if enough people put an alert on a thread or a post, the mods can take a closer look at it?

I dunno, I dont really read Slashdot because, for me, its really a burden to read through. The Forums here, especially the more technical ones, are very easy to browse through. Point and click etc. Also, when I am bored, I enjoy reading about other people's problems - sometimes I am able to bail them out - if their post isnt as popular as "I GOT 3.0GHZ ON AIR with my fx-57" Im worried that those who need help will get the shaft - their posts left unseen.

How about if the thread gets low enough rating the OP automatically get electo-shocked?

We're looking at various ways to improve the quality of posts here in the forums. We're looking at systems like SlashDot to accomplish this task. We've made the decision to modify the forum product for our own needs, so we can do anything we want.
Here are some ideas being tossed around:
1) The idea is that you can vote on a individual post which will affect the overall threads rating.
2) There will be a maximum and minimum vote that a message can have to avoid abuse, and if you post in the thread your votes would be removed as you can now effectively sway the rating of a thread by posting.
3) If you have posted to a thread you can't vote.
4) You could set a thresh hold setting that would dictate what you would see, the rest would be collasped (those below your thresh hold)
We're open to your feedback on what you think works and doesn't work with this type of system.
Cheers!

i agree.
i must admit that i tend to post stupid questions with simple answers. while i doubt my question about what type of fan to buy for my chipset would get a negative rating, it would probably not get a good rating. meaning that a question which could be answered in two or three posts over the course of a 10 minute span might suddenly not get answered for a week.
not that im so damn important, but the quick and helpful answers around here on things that actually matter (ie: not my constant P&N addiction) drew me to this forum to begin with.
speaking of P&N, i cant help but think voting would be abused. in a situation like that, i just dont think its fair for people to judge threads...in theory, it would help add to discussion but it seems in practice it would just end up as a united front against certain posters.
i could also see this as being a slight problem in OT.
there are a few users who, for whatever reason, are almost universally crapped on by a majority of users. it would be a shame if they were given the shaft.

hence my suggestion that if they post in a thread, it's a automatically a positive vote. It's probably too late to save the few individuals who seem to have singled themselves out. However, it seems it would be a little harder to get a collective gathered specifically against one user. Don't like the user or the user's thread? Give it a low vote, and don't post in the thread. Who's going to know that you voted? I think that threads titles: "Hey, let's all vote 0 for syringer's thread" (not to pick on Syringer, but it seemed an appropriate example) would hopefully result in vacation time. Except for PM's, it'd be really difficult to mount an attack on a thread.
