so here's the deal, due to my temporary living arrangement i have been paying my neighbor to use his internet connection via a usb dongle on my pc. internet works great (well, great for wireless) but now i run into a new problem. i have a lot of random media on my pc, and i have an xbox hooked up to the tv in my living room to stream videos thru xbmc. problem is, xbmc needs the folders on my pc to be shared to view them.. not a big deal, except, i don't want to give my neighbor access to everything on there. if i turn on file sharing, he will be able to see everything on my pc..

does anyone know a way to have windows treat the two different connections differently? like firewall the wireless to keep my stuff private, yet allow the local connection to remain shared for my xbox?

i offer a plate of delicious e-cookies to the person who can help me sort this out.

btw, i'm using xp pro corporate edition on my machine..

Since you're using XP Pro(and hopefully NTFS), you can use NTFS and Shared Folder Permissions. Does xbmc allow you to use a username/password for accessing a shared folder or does it only do anonymous connecting? If you can use a username/password, I would just setup a simple shared folder that allows an account to access shared folders for xbmc. You could refine the permissions to grant the minimum access you need.

A simple (but less secure) way of doing it would be to setup a hidden share (adding the $ after a share) so only you know it is there and setting the permission to read only. if you do it this way, only someone who knows of the share can access it, but if someone finds out, they can read any file in the shared folder.

You could also get a firewall that allows you to limit smb traffic to only one ip. So just the ip on your xbox can connect to your computer through the ports fore filesharing.

You can do that with windows firewall. Just change the scope from all computers to a list that includes the xbox and any other computers he wants.
