I was watching the Segway people demonstrating those things for some BART staffers at the Lake Merrit Station in Oakland today. They looked pretty neat. I talked to the demonstrator who said they can be bought from his store in Oakland for $2K to $6K, meaning used to new. One of the guys said a passenger let go of their Segway at the Fruitvale BART Station where it went on to the tracks and was creamed by a train.

They look expensive, but perhaps an interesting type of transport if used in conjunction with BART. I don't know what their range is and do they still get good press?

LOOK expensive? Hell, they ARE expensive. I just browsed the Segway of Oakland website. USED ones start at $3200. New ones start around $5500, and he had a couple of customized ones listed for over $12K.

They're pretty fun to ride around on, but I really don't see the point of owning one.

That's interesting because the guy demonstrating them said used ones start at $2,000.00. He was from the Oakland store. Typical salesman BS.

He was probably truthful.
You tack undercoating and rustproofing on there though, you're touching 3200 pretty quick.

I don't see the problem with allowing it on a subway, provided it is walked onto a subway, just like a bike.

I'm not sure why I would want to pay $5000 for a replacement to my legs. My current legs work fine, and can even climb stairs. I mean, isn't that thing the ultimate expression of sloth?

That MAY be true, but it's not what their website says...

Absolutely not. If you've been the BART during commute hours lately, you'll see how crowded the trains are. We already have to share the trains w/ bikes, there's no room for the ipod of personal transportation on BART. Segway's the most obnoxious and useless invention ever created in the 21st century.

When we were on Maui in December, the resort's security staff ran around on Segways...those fuckers move! I don't know actual MPH, but they looked quite a bit faster than the average person can run.
I considered one of these to go back/forth to school, (about 4 miles each way) but many of the roads I'd have to go on have no sidewalks of any kind and are heavily traveled, so IMO, it'd be dicey.

A Segway would probably be less of a problem on the train than a bike.

13 mph. Faster than most people could run for any significant amount of time. After spending a day walking around Washington, D.C. I would have loved to have had one. :Q Also the day I spent walking around Central Park.

What do you mean? I've ridden BART for close to 20 years and have never had any problem with any bikers on the trains.

Segway is not exactly compact or light weight by any means. Remember, a segway is a motorized device that is prone to malfunction. What if a passenger loses control of his/her segway on a packed train and injures other passengers. Who's gonna pay for the damage? Bring a segway onto a train just opens a can or worms we don't need right now.
