Wow. I wish other game manufacturers would follow suit and start releasing games at $19.99 retail. For me I'm not a fan of sport games.

Wow, that is excellent news! Although I have yet to play any of the Sega/ESPN series football or basketball, I've ready some very good reviews on the 2004 editions.

Yes, this is great news...

ESPN NFL 2004 and NHL 2004 are both quality titles. 2k5 versions are sure to be even better.

Hot deal.

They probably figure they'll get a lot more people buying at $20 then they would have at $50. Whereas before people would decide between ESPN and Madden, now a lot will get ESPN because it's $20 regardless of whether they also get Madden. Interesting move, and I'm sure if it works you'll see other games in competitve genres like this doing the same thing.

A lot of people will buy new games every year now. I usually buy a football game every 3 years or so. They don't change enough each year to justify a new purchase. While player updates aren't worth $50, I'm tempted to pay $20 for them.

Despite most critics agreeing that Sega's ESPN 2k line being as good or better than EA's line, EA sells much better simply because it has a built in fan base due to being around a lot longer (and Sega not making the series available on Gamecube anymore too I guess).

I think this is a smart move to get people that otherwise would have passed it over in favor of Madden again to give it a try. Then next year, they can probably raise the prices of the 2k series back up to usual and have the new converts much more willing to put out the money for it.

Personally I've been a big fan of the Sega Sports 2k lineup since it premiered on Dreamcast, and am looking forward to the new NFL & NHL games (will NHL 2k5 have a built in lockout mode?)

this is a marketing technique like PinwiZ says. not really a trend. if a company sell 2-3x more and not lose over half their customer base, they'd do it. supply and demand dictates the selling price. if everyone stops purchasing games which sell @ $50, no company will sell it that high. sega basically did a market survey and checking to see how much people were willing to pay for and found a point where they can still be profittable and expand their fan base.

Madden 2005 @ $50 is still a MUCH better buy than NFL2K5 @ $20..........................

You can't touch Maddens gameplay and dynasty modes.

For someone who hasn't played either of the new games you sure know a lot about them.

I've played every Madden game in the series and every NFLxxx game since they started back on the Dreamcast. Madden is for the real football fans and NFL is for the arcade style ballers.

According to the article linked in my OP, all Sega Sports titles will now be 'value priced'. ie $19.99.

I just hope they can keep the quality of the games at high levels with those low prices.

I was having trouble deciding on Madden or Sega.......Sega wins this round. $60 for the Madden Coll. Ed. is ridiculous!!! Sega will definitely get my money this year.

I like the dynasty mode in NCAA but could care less about running an NFL franchise. I also don't see any distinct differences that would merit calling the Sega line 'arcadey'. Interesting term though, I'll have to remember it.

Odd. Most reviews of ESPN NFL call it more "realistic" than Madden. But hey, play wayever you like.
