hopefully they'll make a comeback

I dunno. I don't know if the market will support four home consoles. This generation looks like it will ultimately be split relatively evenly.

They'd have to come out with something really special and unique.

(sorry Queasy, I come off more argumentative than I'm meaning to, just tossing some ideas around).

I think it will, but not one from Sega. In fact, I'd argue that it is already supporting 4 consoles with the PS2. I personally believe that Nintendo could profitably bring out another system that would compete more directly with the PS3/360 (as long as they slot the Wii lower), and even Microsoft can keep the 360 going after their next system (again if they slot the 360 low enough it will get people unwilling to go for the newest system). I just don't think that Sega can provide a system, and it would be stupid for them to since I don't think they could provide enough games for it. Unless they plan on making one for $50, that appeals entirely to the casual gamer (as in even moreso than the Wii, with much simpler games). I really think there would be a very healthy market for sub $100 systems, and the PS1 and PS2 are showing just how long of life a console can have.

I would guess, however, that they might make a special anniversary game or something, just a token of appreciation for their fans. I would imagine that Sega has taken note of the pretty widespread fondness for the system, something which seems to be falling further to the wayside with each passing system. Maybe they're debating on bringing out a couple of games that run on older arcade hardware and would like to see if they might be able to offset the cost by porting it to the Dreamcast in the process. Or maybe they've looked into emulating the DC on newer hardware that wouldn't cost much to produce.

Only in America. Everywhere else Sony and Nintendo dominate.

Why would Nintendo bring out a 2nd console? That would be a business suicide. They aren't directly competing with Sony or Microsoft anyways. The Wii is directed towards a different array of people.

iSuppli put out a predicted world marketshare split of 35.4%/34.5%/29.8% - PS3, Wii, 360 by 2011. That is relatively even. Especially coming off the last generation where Sony truly dominated with something like a 60% marketshare.

damn that sucks. good thing i didnt register mine.

Phishing for Dreamcast serial numbers? Or giving out Gmail addresses that they have access to, in order to spy on people?

I got a modded one with a slew of burned games in a box somewhere, at one time I had over 40 games, but lending and drunk roomates-longtimeago-brought that number down considerably. Man I was sad the day they killed it.

Dreamcast fit that bill. Sucks that they don't know how to sell like sony.

I'm not even sure how 'unique' you'd consider the Dreamcast. It was essentially an arcade machine that featured a lot of arcade games, and some games unique that simply sold to the owners of the system who liked the arcade games as it was.
The Dreamcast was really different and unique in a strange way, and it'd be great to see a Dreamcast 2. I seriously think, that with the right software lineup, it'd sell crazy. But, how well would it sell if all the games were basically ports of current games. Sega would have to put up a massive 1st party exclusive front that really sold the system. Because with the 360 in the position now, it gets a lot of the exclusive titles ported from the PC, and a few 360-only titles... but Sony seems to be enjoying the most AAA console-exclusive (ie not released on other consoles, or the PC for that matter) titles. The PS2 enjoyed that same success and is probably what drove the Dreamcast down. The arcade hits tended to be all ports from Sega-based arcade units. And yes, I realize I'm generalized here big time... but I don't see a new Sega unit really fairing that well. The timing would have to be perfect. The Dreamcast had perfect timing, except for the PS2 releasing so shortly after it.
If Sega would release the Dreamcast in between console generations from the other big 3.. they'd probably have the best chance at success. Basically it would need to be on the cheaper end though, $200 preferably, maybe $300 if it had great hardware... and a decent-to-great exclusive software library.

I'd love to see it... but the market is going to be tough. Microsoft kind of stepped in and took Sega's place. Three really sounds like the most the market could handle. Four would be interesting, as someone will get nudged out. I have a feeling if that were the case, and Sega could be successful, it'd be the Wii getting shunned. Notably because a lot of people will probably have gotten theirs, and a lot of analysts are suggesting a lot of Wii owners may pick up a PS3 is the prices come in line this holiday season. I believe it, due to the storm of titles releasing this year for the PS3.

Ah yes, the Dreamcast, it was a decent console. I've had three of those, the two first eventually ceased working (not recognizing any games anymore, even brand new ones).

The third one lasted forever until I sold it due to a lack of interesting games for my tastes (back then I liked FPS'es more than anything else, and having only UT and Quake 3 Arena being worth it wasn't enough to keep the console too long, although I've had it for a solid two years in total, I just barely played it). And, you guys remember SEGA's tag line back then to advertise it? It was, if I remember correctly "It's Thinking".

A modded dreamcast? You don't need a modchip to play burned games.

They were probably just setting themselves up to send out some offer to fanatics who would no doubt give them credit card numbers.

It was pretty much revealed to be a scam by the 2nd page of comments on Kotaku. I laugh at everyone who registered.
