hopefully they'll make a comeback
I dunno. I don't know if the market will support four home consoles. This generation looks like it will ultimately be split relatively evenly.
They'd have to come out with something really special and unique.
(sorry Queasy, I come off more argumentative than I'm meaning to, just tossing some ideas around).
I think it will, but not one from Sega. In fact, I'd argue that it is already supporting 4 consoles with the PS2. I personally believe that Nintendo could profitably bring out another system that would compete more directly with the PS3/360 (as long as they slot the Wii lower), and even Microsoft can keep the 360 going after their next system (again if they slot the 360 low enough it will get people unwilling to go for the newest system). I just don't think that Sega can provide a system, and it would be stupid for them to since I don't think they could provide enough games for it. Unless they plan on making one for $50, that appeals entirely to the casual gamer (as in even moreso than the Wii, with much simpler games). I really think there would be a very healthy market for sub $100 systems, and the PS1 and PS2 are showing just how long of life a console can have.
I would guess, however, that they might make a special anniversary game or something, just a token of appreciation for their fans. I would imagine that Sega has taken note of the pretty widespread fondness for the system, something which seems to be falling further to the wayside with each passing system. Maybe they're debating on bringing out a couple of games that run on older arcade hardware and would like to see if they might be able to offset the cost by porting it to the Dreamcast in the process. Or maybe they've looked into emulating the DC on newer hardware that wouldn't cost much to produce.
