Seems Like AMD should not push the BTX standard... Ever!

Why cater to Intel's necessity? By "stalling" the onset of BTX, they can really do some more eating into the market share...

Guessing that BTX is going to flop or at least not "catch on" very fast at all...

Why wouldn't BTX catch on? Does it have some inherent flaw? I guess I'll have to research it a bit. But two things occur to me here.
1. Both AMD and Intel standardized on the ATX standard.

2.Competition is good. You don't want a stagnant market where AMD can just sort of sit back and reap the profits rather than working like hell to come up with the next best thing.
Intel will now be forced to improve their product and lower prices to again attract buyers and AMD will continue having to work hard to stay on top.
All IMO of course. 😉

Well, besides the fact that every single case maker would have to update every single case, I think BTX is just Intel being arrogant. They think that just because their chips are inferior, that the rest of the market needs to change to fir them. I'm not buying it...though Dell prolly will, because they're Intel's yes-men.

I really didn't know much about computers then, but I did read a lot of those massive Computer Shopper magazines at the time. If I remember correctly wasn't there a battle for at least 3 years over which is best? Probably stragglers stayed for even longer. But in the end, all agreed the newer was better. Caveman, why would the transition to BTX be any different?

Tabb does have something there. I myself was building systems way before then. ATX did take about, if memory serves me right, about 2-3 maybe more years to switch over in full force in 1997. While the spec had been around for a year or two before then.

Late model socket 7 systems did use ATX, but it was mainly a AT form factor. Early P2 on they were mostly ATX though some boards were made for AT. After that ATX since. 😀

as far as i can tell, doesn't BTX only offer standardized PCI-E slots as well as a rearranged PCB layout? Not sure if those improvements warrant a complete shift in standards. What we really need is a standard where motherboards have a single brick connector for all the wire connections- like the USB, Power switch, reset, etc... that would make building a computer so much easier 🙂

Not from what I've read here on AT and elsewhere. One reason I'm glad they're not jumping onboard is they don't think they need it. Great. I like that better than thinking about how Intel seems to NEED BTX because of the inefficiencies in the P4. I want the P4 dead. Been saying that since 99. If ATX still provides all the needs for their forthcoming, then I for one say screw BTX. I don't want chips to run any hotter. It's a dangerous trend. I'm glad Intel seems to be coming to their senses.

actually, i read somewhere that the BTX includes the Brick connector for power switch, led, reset and hdd. i guess thats good enough.

There is some indication that BTX standard has some significant cooling and noise advantages for small form factors. The AT article on BTX was reasonably clear about that. If AMD pushed BTXmicro or BTXpico boards right now, they could really crush Intel in the growing Media PC market.

dont think so

Instead of cooling let's develop technologies that don't get so freaking hot. Think outseide the box. I hate the roar of fans. I want silent!

Excellent! That is a sorely needed detail.

BTX is stupid, I won't change until I absolutely have to, or for some reason the cases look much better or something.

Im hoping BTX and Dual Core have matured by the time I build a new rig which is currently around 2 years time.

From reading about AT Vs. ATX, I might be unlucky.

AMD will likely switch if BTX becomes standard amongst OEM systems makers, but it appears so far that it'll be awhile before they need to go BTX out of necessity. It's also possible that AMD won't Officially go BTX, bu that many Motherboard Manufacturers will release BTX AMD mobos anyway for their high volume customers.

couldn't agree more ... btx is just an intel attempt to compensate for their crappy designs. the transition will cost enthusiasts millions as we will have to buy expensive new equipment rather than upgrading incrementally as we normally do. i'm also really annoyed that none of the pcix boards come with more than a couple of pci slots and NO agp slot - another really expensive upgrade. i think i'll be sticking with my atx board without pcix for some time.

INTEL>>>>>>>AMD in market power

Every case and power supply manufacturer on the planet will bow to the almighty Intel.

AMD would be nuts if they didn't follow suit.

all it takes is Dell switching to BTX and running an ad campaign, and then its intel's game again. dont forget market share- cutting edge speed and support in the enthusiast community makes zero difference when it comes to profits.

AMD wont push it because the BTX form put the ram too far away from thhe CPU and wont work because its soo far from the ondie memory controller

BTX uses "standard" 24 pin PSUs that are starting to become standard on PCIe motherboards.

Has anyone done the research on why BTX is better on a mid size or full tower? I seriously don't see how having the PSU on the bottom of the case is gonna make things cooler. Hot air rises if I recall. And if you make an argument you can make it directional to vent it out of the case, can't that also be said if you put the PSU on the top of the case and create a vent up there instead?

it really wont, you can get a ATX mid-full tower Case that mounts the mobo upside down, PCI slots at the top and it will accomplish basically the same thing that BTX is trying to do without reinventing the wheel
