Seeking upgrade advice.

Doh sorry bout that heh.
Anyway I'm looking to upgrade my Celeron 300a, 128mhz of pc100 ram to a 800mhz to 1ghz processor within the next couple months. I am looking to spend up to but not more than $500. I'm currently looking at the AMD Athlon line of processors. Now I'm trying to avoid having to buy new memory but if need be I will. Does anyone have any motherboard suggestions? Which cpu would actually give me the comparitivly better price/performance advantage? Any suggestions/help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello newbie, that's easy to answer.
Get yourself a Duron and an overclocking board like the Asus A7V or the Abit KT7. Cheap Durons start from 650MHz and they overclock plenty. You won't need to buy new memory, though at today's prices another 128Mb would be a very good investment.
You can get what you want for waaaaay less than $500!
Happy hunting.

*By the way, I would look at your hardrive also if it is more than a year old. Durons are 95% as fast as Athlons and both p1ss on Celerons from a great height.

The Current price of the 800MHz athlon is under 100 dollars giving it a sweet price/performance ratio. Most of the mainboards out there now will support running PC-100 ram with the athlon via a BIOS adjustment. The three most popular boards are the ASUS, ABIT and MSI. any one of them would be great. I currently run the ASUS A7V. While I've heard some stories of stability issues, mine has run flawlessly. Each one of those boards will also support overclocking as well helping you tweak the most performance from whichever processor you choose. Also take a look for whichever new offerings have the new VIA KT133(A) chipsets with the 686B South Bridge. This new chipset will really give the most features and future upgradeability to PC-133 SDRAM and ATA-100 drives when the time comes.

Tarrant: I second Rigoletto's recommendation, i.e., get a Duron. I had a d600 that ran stable at 900MHz. I now have a D700 running stable at 1.08GHz. As for motherboards, I favor the Abit KT7 myself but read up on ASUS and MSI as well because each has their good points.
