Seeking Project Ideas: W2K Server & Home Network

Just been trying to do some research on some simple projects, or something that I can do with Windows 2000 Server on my home network. Currently have my main system running W2K Server / SP3
I also have a laptop, and another desktop running Windows 2K..

This is all networked together behind a Linksys router, with cable 1.5k/128k access through the cable modem..

what are some small, simple projects I can come up with to help my better understanding of W2K server? This is all in part of studying for the W2K Server exam... Thanks!

You could setup IIS and experiment with administering a web site.

or

Try configuring media server to stream media on your network

or

Play around (carefully) with the use of group policies/account administration

Connect your Cable Modem directly to the server then use the linksys box as a switch to connect it to the other two PCs.

Use RRAS to connect the other PCs to the internet and make them use dynamic IPs provided by the server. Get Wins and DNS working for name resolution and disable all broadcast transports (netbeui, netbios over TCP/IP) to make sure they're doing their jobs locally.

Install RIS and get your clients booting off PXE with unattended setup files.

Anything you do that involves configuring something is good practice...

Create a domain and play with DHCP, DNS, and active directory. Once you understand how to do that then play around with group objects and setting different policies for different users.

sounds good so far..

As for my cable modem.. its a US Robotics.. it also has a USB port.. so basically... I could hook the cable modem by USB port to the server..
Now as for the NIC.. that would be where the switch would hook to... Would this be by way of Crossover patch cable.. or regular straight through ??
Then I could go through configuring the 2K server and its routing functions..

modem to usb then nic to switch will be straight only use crossover when going hub to hub hub to switch etc

some swithces will come with an uplink port or a button that will turn a port into one in this case you wouldnt need a crossover you could use a straight in the uplink port.

once you get hooked up have a look at RRAS in server to share you net connection around the lan
