Seeking help with my first AMD 64 setup

I understand AMD 64 Venice 3000 has x9 multiplier and 1.8 GHz. My mobo boots with x5. I entered BIOS setup and changed it to x9. Rebooted. Ran CPU-Z. It went back to x5.

After a while, I found I can go up to x7 and 1.4GHz. For x8 and x9, it changes back to x5.

I am not overclocking. I am trying to get the full power I paid for.

CPU frequency = 200 (I didn't change this)
Hammer Fid control = x7 1.4GHz (cannot go over this)
HT frequency = Auto (ranges from 1x to 5x)
PCIE clock = 100 (I didn't change this)
Memclock freg = 200 (I didin't change this. Kingston ValueRam PC3200)

Do I have a bad mobo?

Don't know that mobos bios but a couple of things spring to mind:-
1) Cool'n'Quiet - works by dropping thecpu mult to 5 when cpu is idlle/cool - disable any cool'n'quiet features u see in bios.
2) You did save bios changes b4 exiting bios. - Sorry don't mean to insult u but am unaware of your knowledge.

Gentelmen,
You were right. It was the Cool Thingy. Thanks. I thought I bought a lemon mobo.

I was going to overclock it but I don't see a need to do that. I have no program that pushes CPU to the full x9 speed. I am going to kill the fans to low speed and make it a quiet PC. Thanks again.

hey, in that case, enable cool and quiet. You will get the speed when you need it, and it wil be even quieter at 1 ghz.

Yeah I use it constantly, and if you use a utility like RMclock you can control when it throttles and how much. Saves electricity, runs quiet, and even works with overclocking. Mine 3700+ currently runs 2.8ghz when under a load and 1.5ghz while idle.

Does it work well with X2's?
