Is there anyone on here that knows about digital scanning for example is it possible to scan a hood on a car and would the scan be able to pick up a very slight hail dent . If so would it be possible to link the scan with soft ware that could make a dent count. This relates to estimating hail damage to vehicles

Actually a pretty interesting question. You could start by searching on image processing and surface feature detection or analysis. I would be fairly confident that some level of success could be achieved. The challenges would probably be reliability across different models with different style features, and varying accuracy rates dependent on lighting, angle, and other factors. Given a smooth, unbroken, glossy surface containing x number of dents, and controlled environmental factors, you could probably get good results. Results in the field would be another story altogether.

Meh, so long as the lighting is correct, simply looking for "circles" would probably get you 90% there. Getting much higher than that is going to be much more complicated.

I was thinking about styling features like crease lines, hood ornaments, air grilles, etc. There's a lot of variation in what the "hood" of a car looks like. If you generalized it to just scanning a small patch of a glossy surface for irregularities then it would be easier, but then how do you validate the total number per vehicle?
