Seeking Advice/Opinion: Buying A Big Screen TV!!!

Ok....not really me but a friend of mine needs help. 🙂

Here it goes:

This is initially the TV he wants. Sony site says $3299.99 but he's talked to a couple of people at Circuit City($3099.99) and could pricematch it to $2999.99 and free delivery. He isn't a very technically savy person(hence why I am doing the research for him) and flat lcd and plasma TV's don't concern him since he has a lot of room. He just wants it to be able to get HDTV and PIP of course. He's going to be watching TV with directv and mostly football games.(DVD's now and again) He can control the lighting in the room he is going to be putting the TV in very well so that won't be an issue.

-Is this a good TV for the price, quality, size, and features? (If not can you recommend a tv around the same size(45"-50") and cost($2500-$3200)

-What kind of maintence is he looking at for a rear projection TV like this?

Those are the main questions and I'm sure I'll think of some more as soon as I go to sleep. Any info/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

I second DLP. DLP is SWEET.

I'm a bit confused by your post. You say he has a lot of room yet he is interested in an LCD display. My friend's dad has that exact model. Very, very nice. Hell, his whole damn setup is way too nice. haha.

Anyway, for that kind of money and if your friend has space get him a DLP.

Good luck and have fun!

Yeah, the really skinny LCD's and Plasma's. But he also doesn't want the behemoth rear projection tv's. 🙂

I'll make sure to run him by the Samsung DLP. Thnx.

Really? Where? I'm looking to buy one for my dad. Magnolia is asking 5 grand.

1. its not a DLP or rear projection, its an LCD projection set.
2. if your friend watches sports, tell him to watch it first, they tend to pixelate during high action shots
3. there is a user replaceable lamp on that set. Other than that, no real maintenance is required.
4. that 61" price is not bad...especially considering that Samsung cant make enough of them

I have an LCD RPTV, watch sports and I can tell you mine does not pixellate.

I'm pretty picky about TVs and did significant research on it. The things the naysayers say about LCDs are really overblown IMO. The one thing I agree on with them is black crush. But then again, DLPs suffer from black crush too.

I would avoid the Sony. Their TVs are junk. If you go to avsforum and look up the Sony LCD in the RPTV section, you will find complaints about them. For myself, I purchased Sony's top of the line 36" XBR a few years ago and it broke down on me in 2 years. Their CS is the worst and wouldn't help me despite the fact that after reading up on it, my line of TVs were prone to break because of a manufacturing defect in them.

We jumped on the 60" version of this Sony. It's still on order since the it is relatively new. We wanted the XBR version, but price didn't justisfy the extra features (protective plastic, upgraded sound, memory stick slot, built in HD tuner for broadcast). Projection LCDs are very competitive among Plasmas and DLPs, however one caveat they may have is the black is not as black as the others. Other than that picture quality is very comparable.

Yes, all the salesmen we talked to said that the lamp will need replacement. Many stated that it would cost $100 or less and is DIY. Supposingly 12000 hrs is how long the light will last before you should replace it. Again, I can't wait for this set to come in and see how it performs with console gaming.😀

It is a postage size chip with nearly a million mirrors on it. I think it's a Texas Instruments chip, anyway it uses a projector blub to reflect the image up to the screen. The picture is amazing although blub replacement is a downside due to cost. Some people report "rainbow" effects while watching fast action like car racing etc. I ended up going with a Hitachi 57S500 CRT RPTV but looked at about everything. The Hitachi is a good value!

Actually, replacing the bulb isn't that much of an expense. Its probably like $100-$200 and lasts for 5 years+. When you replace it, its practically a new TV again.

BTW: I agree, Hitachi RPTVs are excellent.

I guess I should detailed that at the time I was reading up on this my wife and I had really looked hard at the Samsung line of DLP's, about five months ago. People on avsforum were reporting dead bulbs in six weeks at times and many times DOA due to a problem with the bulb not being installed correctly at the factory. Then many posted issues of waiting for several weeks to get replcacements. It got so bad many people started doing group buys on them to have them in stock. Again the picture is amazing on them. This is a good article about them and for those interested, if you dig into it enough the simulate the "rainbow" effect.
