EDIT: danmit... hit enter... check back in a sec.

HAs anyone heard of Every 15 minutes? They get their name because statistically someone dies every 15 minutes from drunk driving. Its a program that is put on for High Schoolers. What happens is they simulate a car accident and then hold the funerals for everyone who dies. They also take one person every 15 minutes for a day to show how many people would die from a school from drunk drivers. MY school just went through this. Its increadibly depressing. When the simulate the car accident, they go all the way. They bring in the Fire Department, Police Department and the Ambulance and Helicoptor. The drunk driver gets field tested and then arrested. ITs pretty intense, espically if you have already been in an accident (although, I am an EMT in training and it wasn't a great simulation, they were all calm and what not, but it got the message accross.) They also film this.

The next day they hold the funerals. First they show the video from the accident, and its intense. They never broke charecter once. They even went all the way to the ER and had some mock operations. Forinstance one kid was supposed to have a lower aorta rupture and they where supposed to attempt to clamp it. There is no way to stop a bleed like that. So he died. After the videoThe people get up and read letters that they wrote to the parents as if they died. And the parents do the same thing. Everyone around me was crying. And when this one guys dad did his letter... man. Rough.

It is real effective, anyone else seen anything like this?

yeah, they (or someone like them) did the simulated car accident thing just after prom (or something...mind you I'm pulling this from HS memories 6 years ago), using a couple of kids from athletics and others from drama. I was sick that day, but apparently it was very convincing and the whole school was really upset about it (including teachers....the kids they chose were the good-student-nice-people-that-socialized-with-everyone-and-everyone-liked kinda kids), until the administration revealed the next day it was a setup, and then devited that day to drunk driving awareness....I think. All I remember is what I heard, I was out sick with strep throat....IIRC. :p

believe it or not they did every 15 minutes on tuesday, the funerals were wendesday. It was more impactful this year because i'm a senior and I knew all the people that "died". However i've seen my share of death, and fake stuff does not make me cry on the inside. If it effects just one person and stops them from drinking and driving though, its more then worth it

I actuall helped organise one of these crashes. We did it just after night fall and had invited the middle and high schools to join us. Pretty good turn out about 300 students and about the same number of parents. 2 ambulances, 3 squad cars, 3 fire trucks and 1 heliocopter.

dead silence in the crown when the tones went off. No one could see the accident until after the 1st police car arrived. Pitch black, Dispatch tones, then WHAM car crash.

Went pretty good, no dead teenagers that prom.

happened at my school. The only thing was that they used annoying students during that time. So, instead of being said, most were happy that classes were not interrupted.

We had a thing like that at our school, called Shattered Dreams.

It didn't work too well.. two people from our school died after my graduation year, killing two others, because they decided to hop in a car drunk. It's sad, but what kind of annoyed me is how everyone went on and on about how they were so bright and upstanding and.. no.. they were pretty stupid.

The school didnt pay for it. Ours was paid for by the company who got their money from donations and what not. All in all it cost about $15,000-20,000 to put it on. Expensive. But if it saves one life, its well worth it.

When I drink and drive, I usually speed home so I get home faster, minimizing my time on the road.

No, I'm serious... It's not as bad as it sounds, usually I'll do a couple of lines of coke to keep myself alert.

Gormless twit!

How about you expostulate about this conundrum while explaining to everyone here how anger affects responses on an Intarweb message board.

I agree that you shouldn't drink and drive but methinks that they're starting to swing over to the other extreme. For example: Did you know that you can get a DUI while on a bike? That is fvcking recockulous. Who are you going to hurt on a bike besides yourself? Besides, biking while drunk isn't too hard, I've done it several times and never lost control, never fell off. I'm talking about a BICYCLE btw, not a motorcycle.

And, there's a huge difference between having two beers and having 12. Pretty much anyone who can drive safely normally can drive safely after 2 beers, while driving after 12 is just insane. I understand that the zero tolerance is to prevent people from offending in the first place, but it's pretty harsh to take someone's license away because a cop caught them after having 1-2 beers. That said, the only time I've driven drunk was to move my car up the driveway to let my friend park his car (and yes he had driven drunk from the bar.. I estimate 5-6 beers. It's a huge problem in that city since it's small (100K pple), but I have never gone on roads drunk myself. Don't think I ever will either.)
