Ok my friend said that someone could hack into your network, even if you had a router with NAT. I think that this would be pretty hard... any guru's have a good technical answer? Could someone obtain my IP or MAC addresses if I'm behind a router?

There is so many variables to a question like that. There is no clear cut answer. This is why companys employ security specialist to protect their networks.

Sometimes I wish things were as black and white as that.

Here is a guide on how NAT works.

NAT is just one means to stop it. A wide open host is fare game.

the thing is NAT will stop the clueless hacker because he can't make a direct connection. But there are numerous ways around that.

The thing is software and what is running on your machine. Once you open a connection to another host you are susceptible to an attack.

But for all but the most determined and skilled hackers NAT does its job and is part of overall network security:

It prevents a direct socket connection to the host.

the weakest (or one of the weakest) part of a decently secure network is the users. although social engineering isnt a direct attack or hack on the firewall itself, but if the pure goal is to gain access into the network, se is a powerful tool. ive called help desks and had passwords reset without any verification of my identity. its amazing what a friendly voice and a few corny jokes will get out of a overworked and tired tech support person.
