Does anybody know of security articles for "Why you don;t let employees take equipment home"
The Manager has the servers a router and switch in his home....Has a ISDN line from work to his house..When workers access the server....they are going to his house..
THIS IS BACKWARDS....

All equipment should be in a secured "cood'dl" equipment room within the company ..not the managers home...
The president want me to get articles that say how the equipment should be set up...(believes me..but)

does anybody have any links I can use???
thks
jeff

If the company owns the equipment it should be in their care, I mean does the manager's insurance cover the company's equipment that's in his house?

Company pays for everything......Company now wants the equipment back because of issues with the manager...
But, if they ask he may get suspicious.......and do something...
jeff

First, grab backups of all the data on that server. The equipment is just equipment and can be replaced. The data is why the server exists, so before the manager has a chance to do "something", make a complete backup of all data on the server. Assuming you can pull all the data through an ISDN line.

Tell him you had an insurance audit or something and that the insurance company said they can't cover the equipment being on a non-covered site so he has to return it, if he doesn't return it then call the police.

What the hell I've never heard of anything like that before. Do you work for a mom and pop company because I don't know any large company where you could get away with that. We have certain users where the company provides them with a computer or laptop but hell not production servers. Is he using the equipment to study for certifications thats all I can think of.

He is the manager of the machine shop.....he brings in alot of customers and seems the President cant say no to his requests....They are very secrective and only a couple know about computers...

So basically it sound like you work for a mom and pop shop that has know type of controls. He's not an IT person so he has know business with systems at his house. Do you guys have any type of IT people that work there. You guys don't know how those servers are being maintained basically you don't know if they are being patched backed up or even recieving antivirus updates.

I have just been ask'd to give my opinion...on how to get this guy to bring the equipment back to the building..I do not work there....
Ive been given some great ideas thks
jeff

President needs to get some cojones. A fine mess he let his comany get into.

I think the insurance audit is a good idea. Insurance audit needs to inspect the hardware/environment. If the mgr try's to take stuff back home, fire him.

Must be either close to CO or in new section of town. LEC's copper should take that line down a couple of times a quarter.

That President needs to get some cojones y cabezas.
