security deposit question

Mookow

Lifer
When a rental company returns a security deposit, is it customary to issue one big one for all the roommates, or individual? I am finally getting my deposit back (in full, too 😀), but for some reason my rental company is not sending individual checks, but one big one. WTF? Should I demand that they issue individual checks? Can I make them issue individual checks? There was some bad blood between me and my old roommates, and I dont exactly trust them to give me my share of the check. One of them IM'ed me a couple hours ago, saying he was mailing the check up to me, and to sign it and mail it back for my third roommate to sign. I am heavily suspicious of this, and wont be signing sh!t until I have a nice chat with my old rental company (tomorrow), but I thought I'd solicit ATOT's opinion.

EDIT: Some (possibly pertinent) info I forgot to include:
-we all put in seperate checks for the deposit.
-we were all on the lease
-we paid rent seperately, it wasnt "everyone pay one guy, and he cuts one big check to the rental agency"
-one of my roommates got a seperate check apparently, since he isnt on the group check

from what you have sid it would make sense for them to make a check out individually to each of you

well, yes, that is my opinion. so what possible reason could they have for issuing a group check? Other than my two theories:
-my ex-roommates asked for a group check and are trying to screw me.
OR
-the employees of the rental agency are just really, really lazy (and I know them to be lazy, but I dont think its this bad).

Did you pay your deposit with a single check? If so, they are just refunding in kind.

See the "edit" area of the OP... we all put in our deposits individually

I would call them and speak with a manager, document the date, time and what was said during your conversation.

Since you're ALL on the lease and you initially paid the deposits with separate checks I don't see what the big deal is for them.

However if they have already issued one combined check it's a PITA for them to cancel payment and re-issue checks, I doubt they will do this.

Also check your rental/lease agreement to see if any of this is mentioned. Good luck.

How much resistance do you think I would be recieving to asking them to provide seperate checks? If I mail the group check to them, which should remove the need to cancel payment (and instead just void it), would this clear up most of the resistance?

There is no reason for them to issue separate checks. Even though you paid rent separately, it's not like there are 3 individual leases.

First call them and see what they say. Write down WHO you speak with.

There should be no problems if you can mail back the original group check to them. First make a photocopy of the check, send it via USPS certified with return receipt or with delivery confirmation and address the envelope to the attn of the person you spoke with. Inside the envelope include a short letter mentioning your phone conversation and listing the names, addresses, phone numbers and amounts of the parties involved. Two business days after the returned check has been received call the company to follow up.

Does that make sense?

Yes, that makes perfect sense, thank you oh wise RossMan.

EDIT: I will call them up and unless they object, that is what I will do

from all my exp, it has always been one big check for you to divide.. well except one year, when we actually owed.. 🙂 but asking them to do a separate check is the way to do it.

WhyTF is it so much harder for them to cut seperate checks? What percentage of companies refuse to cut seperate checks?
