Security Center Unavailable

My Norton AV subscription expired 2 months ago . Suddenly I am getting about 30 messages a day telling me it's expired . To turn off these messages , I am supposed to go to the Microsoft Security Center program . However when activating it from Control Panel , it tells me that it is either not running or not available . Any advice would be much appreciated . Thankyou .

While the Security Center being unavailable is a problem, why don't you uninstall Norton Antivirus? Not only is it garbage anyway, but an AV product with old definitions is pretty much as effective as no AV protection at all. If money is an issue, run regular scans with Trend Micro's online scanner, or use AVG Free Edition.

The Security Center runs as a service. Type services.msc in the Run... dialog. If you don't see "Started" next to "Security Center," then right-click it and start it. If it says "Started," then right-click it and select "Restart."

Thanks Scottws .I am no expert on AV software . Does AVG Free Edition do everything that Norton does or do you have to pay for a more complete version ? Thanks again .

AVG is a full version Antivirus, but the detection rate is inferior to Norton and a lot of the pay versions. If you want the best freebie you should get AntiVir. IMHO the best pay versions are Kaspersky, Nod32, and Bitdefender.
