Does anyone have any experience with security cameras? I am looking for one that can do a true 100' distance in the dark. There seem to be a bunch of websites but I don't know junk cameras from gold ones.

Thanks,
Bill

Either will work I believe, either way wire is going to have to be run. Doesn't really matter if it's ethernet or coax, right?

What do you want to see at 100'? If you want to recognize a face or something then you won't have much luck. You'd need an IR spotlight to go with it, and the Field Of View (FOV) would be relatively narrow.
I have a calculator for arecont megapixel cams, I can email it to you if you want. using that spreadsheet and a 2MP cam, you'd need a 16MM lens for a pixel density of 40 pixels per foot, and a 40 ft FOV at 101'.

What's the best I can do distance wise for recognizing a face in a reasonable FOV?

it would really depend on how much light you could push out there and your budget. Bigger camera = bigger potential FOV = bigger bucks.

What do you consider a "reasonable" price ?
How about $150 for the camera? The rest of the hardware , IR source and housing are extra.

150 is reasonable, but I have no idea what I'm looking at on the page you linked me to...

Did you look at the Q-See QSC48030, its been 130 at amazon for awhile....it has the best nightvision, though the CCD isn't all that great. You won't be able to make out faces at that range. They also have the Q-See QSB520SR which uses a better CCD, but has "less" nightvision.

You can also set up your own IR source, but I don't think any consumer level camera can resolve faces at 100ft in the dark.

As for thatt particular page, there ar many, many diffrnt cameras in there. I thought you might b able to chooose one to suit.

Or call them and let them hlp you find wha suits your needs best?

to avoid spiders and bugs covering your lens, it's best to get external IR cases.
