Securing our border

So once again we are going to start hearing more and more about securing our (southern) border now that the presidential campaigns are in full swing. I disagree with Republicans on a lot (dems too though), but what exactly is the argument against it? Doing so seems like such a no brainier, but obviously there is pushback. Why shouldn't we?

How much money and how many men do you think it will take to secure the border? Why do you think people come to this country? Are there alternatives to securing our border or things that can be done in conjunction with securing our border?

An immigration bill was passed in the senate in 2013, what about that bill don't you like?

I'm sure there are alternatives that can be used in conjunction and those should be utilized as well. And I'm sorry but I don't believe for a minute that in the year 2015 the border can't be secured fairly easily and efficiently if we wanted to, it just seems that we don't. And if that is the case that's ok, but why? Shave 1% off the military budget and bam there we go. No way we need a string of tanks that was posted above surely in jest or even a big ass fence.

I want you to notice something about both of those train pics, sourced from google and taken from 2 different sources. Both trains look like they are parked on long sidings next to an active railroad track, ready to be deployed at a moments notice.

That bill was good but IIRC it would have reduced the flow of illegal workers only by about 30%.

You can never make the border a 100% secure, but at least 75% should be a target to shoot for.

You addressed zero questions I asked. If border security is a concern for you then you need to be able to answer the questions I asked. Otherwise, all you appear to be looking for are talking points and politicians have plenty of those.

Fences by themselves do nothing. You need rapid response teams along the entire border AND you have to be willing to deal with human rights violations if you're going to use deadly force. Since only the loonies in the senate and house are willing to back those options, you're left with herding cats.

I started the thread not knowing an answer so I asked a question. You responded by asking me several in turn, none of which were helpful in clearing this up for me. I'd love to answer your questions, but I don't know the answers (thus the point of this thread).

Then you should start by reading this, forming an opinion, then based on your opinion, support those that support your position (ie those that voted for or against the bill).

And sexist, and elitist, and ageist . . .

Off the meds again?

As for the OP's question. Because the only solution that may even be remotely acceptable to those who constantly beat the "secure the border" drum is probably something that would like the border between East and West Germany.

So we shouldn't secure the border because to do so we'd have to secure the border. M'kay . . . So you'd be fine with securing the border as long as we do nothing to actually prevent people from traveling across it.

Also, no meds here. I'm a conservative - we LIKE our parents.

I hope we secure it. Otherwise, it might float off!
lol +1

So THAT explains why the border has been replaced by the border region. Who knows exactly where that darned thing has floated off to?

I vote for basically a Great Wall of China to be built along the WHOLE border. On the towers are snipers and machine guns nests. But build it about a mile inside our border and fill that mile with land mines. Put up signs at the actual border that say enter at own risk and we shoot to kill. Also put in some devices that can feel ground moving so we know if they are digging a tunnel.

Should put a nice dent in the few lucky ones that somehow survive the mine field and snipers and the wall.

It is cost prohibitive and honestly wont stop the flow. It may slow it in some areas. But the migrants will find another path.

A lot of the issues surrounding illegal immigration would be solved if we passed meaningful immigration reform. Reform that makes it easier to become a citizen. This is just prohibition on immigration. We know how prohibition works out in other markets right?

I think we have seen a wall like this before. Oh where was that again? Berlin I believe? They have since taken that wall down for good reason.
