Securing Linux (Mandrake 9)

Hi, I just Mandrake 9 last night as a dual boot with Win98. I clicked on the "Download and installed security updates & patches" and I chose an install with *no* services. I'm also behind a NAT router. Based on this, am I safe in assuming that the Mandrake is install is at least as "secure" as the Win98? And yes, I know better than to stay logged in as root 🙂
 
If you're not running any services, and you're the only one using the machine locally, then yes - you're pretty much invulnerable.
 
Your setup is probably quite secure, but while we're on the topic, here's two cool linux security tools.

Bastille Linux A set of security "hardening" tools, that I believe still support mandrake specifically, very handy, and educational.

For all your packet filtering needs Fire Starter is a wonderful little tool. Worth it for the match-toting penguin logo alone. 🙂
