Hmm...how many of you find this investigation facist, but also call for law enforcement's head for not stopping the Columbine attack? Would you be here moaning that they looked into one of those kids records based on a website they ran? Would you also have been here decrying an investigation of suspected Arab terrorists before 9/11? Just wondering if this is more pathetic partisanship or just plain hypocrisy.

The teachers did the right thing reporting the kid. He obviously has some mental problems. Better to step in now and deal with this than in two years when he is arrested for blowing up a government building or something. ALthough far fetched as that outcome is we have seen enough cases where the schools did not act when inapproprate behavior is detected from kids int heir care turn out the wrong way. The kid needs some counseling and hopefully he will get it now.

Joltin' Joe Stalin would agree with you. Anyone who uses art as a political statement need to be sent off to the gulags. Thanks for rescuing us with you expert commentary on mental illness.

Stalin my ass, the guy's a flaming liberal.

You have given two choices. Both are wrong. Thanks for playing though, and your lovely parting gifts are in the mail!

Um...well as far as I can tell, no one?

Sort of feels like you're grasping at straws there...drawing parallels that don't really seem to exist. The kid drew a picture and the secret service investigated. Then the school punished him/her for basically voicing a political belief. A harsh one, surely, but I feel he/she was entitled to it without being 'disciplined' regardless of who it was refering too.

Your conclusion is overdrawn: Drawing pictures is not the same threat as drawing guns.

I do not see the difference between having a poster of the president as a devil and just walking around saying you hate Bush. Both are on the same low education level. Saying you hate bush is really not any worse. Basically they could be construed as freedom of expression or as hate speech. Depends on your point of view. It is like saying all republicans want to poisin the air, starve your grand parents, and get rid of the school lunch for your kids. If you do not have to quantify your remarks they are just political statements with no basis of fact or reason.

As my old English Teacher would say, Prove It!

Personally I think both tactics are wrong. Saying you hate bush is wrong because hate serves no purpose. It only breeds violence. Making maliscous posters is an expression of your Hate. Hate does nobody any good in the world. Hate is what makes people biggets, Hate is why people killed the Jews, Hate is the root of Kosavo.

Hate breeds Fear. What we Fear we want to kill!

As far as discipline goes, Making a preson write a 5 page report on why they hate Bush would be appropriate. This way the person has to give a line of reasoning for the Hate. Hate is inherently evil.

At least the school officials got the brave part right.

Hypocritical pricks every last one of them.

We had kids expelled from school here in Georgia for drawing pictures like that a few months back.

They are in "special" school now.

I see no censorship. The secret service is non-partisan and they do not take orders from any party. Bush can't sick them on someone.
They are there to investigate threats and protect the President and VIce-President and visiting heads of state, and to help stop counterfeiting of U.S. currency and fraud against the government. They have offices all over the country in all 50 states, most major cities. They do nothing but investigate these kinds of potential threats. If the President or another one of their protectees had been in town I am sure they would have been busy guarding them.
You have the right to freedom of speech. You could even threaten that you will harm the president but of course if the S.S. hears about it you will be investigated until they determine you are not a threat, if ever. That is their job.

Heil Bugs!!!

pisabird:

When hate is illegal we can all move to Cuba.

Hate is a loosely used verb, so I wouldn't assume the speaker who says "I hate Bush" has invested much emotional capital. In fact, I would hope the opposite is true.

Drawings and speech should be, and are at law, given very wide latitude. I wouldn't be surprised if the ACLU gets involved in this matter because it's an obvious First Amendment breach.

So how long will it be until people like that simply dissappear into the night, like in the old Soviet Union? Seems like we're heading in that direction anyway.

Goddamn if I was over-analyzed like that, I'd really wanted to go blow stuff up.

And that's the way we should be. If only Soviet Russia had been Fundamentalist Christian, and the KGB had loved Christians, yet rightfully spied on Jews and other heathens, the USSR would have been an ideal society.

Guess we'll never hear from Jeff7 again.
