Secret Service Interviews Seventh Grader In Counterfeiting Case

The Deseret Morning News (2/19, Reavy) reports, "A Bennion Junior High School student was booked into Juvenile Detention Wednesday for allegedly printing money on his home computer and passing it around the school. The 13-year-old boy was arrested for investigation of forgery, possession of a forged document and theft by deception." He is accused of "printing $5 bills on his home computer and then passing them out to friends or using them in the school vending machines." A police officer investigating the case "looked at the one of the $5 bills in question, determined it was fake and called the Secret Service for assistance, which is typical in forgery cases." It is believed the boy printed at least $100 worth in counterfeit bills.

KSL.com (2/18) of Salt Lake City notes, "Because counterfeiting is a federal offense, Secret Service agents interviewed the 7th-grade boy. ... At least 18 students had the bills. Besides being suspended from school, the boy faces felony charges of forgery and possession of a forged document, as well as theft by deception."

I just personally found this really funny, that the SS was investigating a seventh grader for counterfeiting, like when the SS was investigating a cartoonist for possibly making threats against Bush.

Yeah, that's kinda what the Secret Service does. There may be a provision in the law that obligates the Secret Service to investigate counterfeiting and threats to the President "except those from persons who don't seem to be likely counterfeiters or assailants", but I've never heard of it.
