Secondary IDE Channel disappearing

I have a friend who has a computer with a Nforce 2 motherboard. The drives on the secondary IDE channel disappeared. I went into the device manager and uninstalled the secondary IDE channel and they came back. Unfortunately it happened again a day later. Does anyone know a solution to this? He is not using the nforce IDE drivers. The microsoft ones are being used. Thanks!!!
 
I have had this happen on numerous occasion throught the years. My fix was simple - replace the data cable.
