Do I have another defective motherboard with the exact same problem? I am now on my second Gigabyte P55-ud3R that is exhibiting the exact same problem as the original one I RMAed. When I setup the system the board and the system start and post fine. If the system is turn off for a while (3+ hours, sometimes longer), the board seems to lose its cmos setting and refuses to post (no beeps). If I pull the battery for awhile the system will post with the default cmos setting and the bios will show a screen showing a list of fail startup attempts and ask if I want the most recent good set of setting.

This is the second mother board to do the exact same thing. I have swapped out the battery (twice), the power supply, the memory, the cpu all with no change in the problem. Once the system gets past post it works fine. If I turn it off for a short while it will boot up fine.

Do I have a second bad board with exactly the same problem? Am I missing anything before this one goes back.

Thanks

Motherboard: Gigabye GA-P55-ud3r (bios f2 or f4)
CPU: Core i7-860
Memory: 8GB (4x2GB) -G.Skill DDR3 F3-10666CL8D
Power Supply: Rosewil PR550-2 (550 watts) or Thermaltake W0319RU (850 watts)
Graphics Card: BFG BeForce 7950 GT or Galaxy Nvidia Geforce GTS 250

Have you tried the following.

Minimal build outside of the case? Possible MB short to case?

2 sticks of mem instead of all 4?

Are you running stock speed or overclocking?

thanks for the reply. all speeds are stock and I'm only running 2 sticks (which ran through 10 passes overnight with memtest86 with no errors)....seems like something is corrupting the cmos but I don't know what.

It is probably some particular BIOS setting which is causing the instability.

Load optimized defaults, disable power saving technologies and go from there. Make sure the CPU is getting enough voltage and your Vtt and vDIMM voltages are not more than 0.5V apart (i.e., 1.10V and 1.60V, or 1.15V and 1.65V, etc.)

There is also BIOS F5a I believe.

Increase your Ram timings to a more conservative setting. Set performance to Standard from Turbo.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have been using conservative (default) setting.
Memory is set to the bios default of 9-9-9-9-24 (Memory is rated 8-8-8-21). Everything else is off.

I didn't know about the new bios, thanks for the info. I just finished flashing the new f5b bios. I'll have to see if that does the trick.

The computer had been off so I had to go through my ritual again to do the flash. Take out the battery for about an hour (using the reset jumper does not always work). Replace the battery and start the computer. After 3 attempted restarts I get a screen that looks like this:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded
Post Error occurs!
Profile 1) : Default
Success Boot Record : Last Know Good
Success Boot Record 1) : 3 times
Success Boot Record 2) : 2 times
Success Boot Record 3) : >5 times
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I choose the "last know good" and it restarts and posts successfully.
I then go into setup and choose optimize settings, reset the clock and I'm good to go again until the computer is left off for while.

I have the computer off now, so we will see if the new bios works in couple hours.

Ok, I'm not the only one with this problem!

Before I get your hopes up high, I haven't resolved it yet. For details on my situation, read the following:

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1470862

I was planning on trying some more things with the mobo outside of the box this weekend. I've been putting it off because of my watercooling setup. My current workaround has been sleeping the computer instead of ever shutting it off. As noted, restarting doesn't cause the issue...

What's your hardware like compared to what I have in my signature in the link?

Is it possible that there's a grounding issue in your case (no pun intended)? I have noted that when I plug my pump in (it's AC), sometimes the computer will come out of sleep. Though it seems unlikely considering you've swapped everything..

What case are you using? I'm using a HAF922.

Edit: By the way, how long did it take for a RMA? Seems like we are using completely different parts..

Edit2: Components:

Gigabyte P55-UD3R | i5 750 @ 4.2 Ghz (in progress)
Swiftech Apogee XT | Panworld 40PX | BIP II | 2x Scythe Slipstream 1200
Audigy2 | Behringer MS 40 | Dayton 10" Sub
2x2GB OCZ Obsidian PC12800 | Intel X25-M 80GB G1 | 512MB HD4870 | Panasonic 54" S1

Updating the bios to f5b didn't help. After the update I left the machine off for 3 hrs and once again it will not post without removing the battery for an hour and basically resetting the cmos to its default.

Talonz, I saw your post when I was trying to research this problem. I bought the both motherboards from Newegg and the second is still within their 30 day return/refund window. I am going to try the motherboard outside the case. If it still fails, then its back to Newegg. The question is do I try a third p55-ud3r (potentially a good board) or try a different board.

The setup for this computer, as it stands now is:
Motherboard: Gigabye GA-P55-ud3r (bios f2 or f4 or f5b)
CPU: Core i7-860
Memory: 8MB (4x2MB) -G.Skill DDR3 F3-10666CL8D
Power Supply: Rosewil PR550-2 (550 watts) or Thermaltake W0319RU (850 watts)
Graphics Card: BFG BeForce 7950 GT or Galaxy Nvidia Geforce GTS 250
Case: Antec 900-2
System HD: WD VelociRaptor 150GB

This is going to sound kinda stupid and may or may not help you out.

I had a similar problem with a build and it turned out to be the reset switch on the case. The symptoms where exactly as you described.BButnin my case if I shut down it wouldn't start up even within minutes.

I'd suggest remove all wiring from case and test again. Reset, power,LEDs,USB,etc.

Did you also turn off the PSU main switch after shutting down the system?
Try to manually assign the memory related voltages in BIOS rather leave it for "Auto".

Thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately I've tried different PSUs, and I think just about every combination in BIOS.. I'm still planning on trying it outside of the case once I get a chance. jayrs keep us posted on how that goes if you get around to it before I do!

I have been having problems with my GA-P55-UD3R for several weeks now. Have exchanged quite a few emails with their tech support, and their replies have been anywhere from not answering my questions, to telling me I needed to update my bios.

So a little bit about my problem. When the machine would start to boot, the bios would attempt to see my hard drives. I have 6 hard drives, but when having problems, it would not see the first 4 drives ( my boot drive is of course the first drive channel zero master ). So it would just sit there for a minute or more and then when hitting the delete key it would go into the bios, and NOT display channels zero master and slave, and channels 1 master and slave ( but it would display channel three and channel four).

Finally getting very frustrated, cause sometimes it would boot okay and then other times not, I decided to one last time phone Gigabyte tech support, and this time I got ahold of someone who knew exactly what the problem was.

He told me that others with multiple drives have also had this problem. As he is telling me this, I am already thinking seriously of pulling the d*mn board out and throwing it into the garbage.

So he has me go into the bios, and told me to go to "Hard Disk Boot Priority". It showed my first 6 drives, and for position number 7, it had "BOOTABLE ADD IN CARDS". He had me move the "BOOTABLE ADD IN CARDS" to the number 2 postition, right behind my boot drive, and then save the bios settings, and ever since I have not experienced any more boot problems.

Hopefully someone else who has this problem will get a chance to see my reply, cause depending upon which tech support person you talk to, OR who reads your email questions at Gigabyte tech support, you might get this answer, OR you might get a duhhhhh.
