Does anybody remember whether the pentium III's (coppermines) were multiplier locked? I want to upgrade some computers (read processors) for my parents's office. The motheboards they have (slot 1) top out out at 800Mhz (100Mhz bus). The deal is this: 800Mhz Slot 1 processors are more exepensive that 850s and the 850s are more readily available. Since I'd be putting it together for them and not myself, I'd like to get boxed processors. I need to know if I can effectively UNDERCLOCK one of these and use it on a 100Mhz bus x8 multiplier (without any soldering or funny business seeing as these are to be used at an OFFICE and I'll have to make a 3 hour drive to fix them if there's a problem). Thanks in advance!

Mr.Jangles, All the P3's whether it's coppermine or Tualatin, multipliers are set in stone so you can't change them. same with the celeries. If you want to downclock, decrease the FSB and that it. As for the mobos in the office, you can put the P3 850 or higher one and it will work even though the mobo may not recognize as i.e. 850mhz or whatever, but it will still work.

Sigh.... I'm an idiot. Those motherboards top out at 850. Not 800. I don't know how I managed to read it wrong off of the MB info webpage the other day. Sorry for wasting your time. I do appreciate your help, though.

you can also use a good slocket(preferably with voltage adjustment as you didn't say which board you're using) & FCPGA p3 .
you can then use a 1 or 1.1GHz p3 100fsb cpu!
if you've got extra cash but still want to keep the boards, then have a look at the powerleap solution! :)
