SEC suspends Florida-Arkansas crew

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? The Southeastern Conference has suspended officials from last weekend?s Arkansas-Florida game after the crew was involved in its second controversial call of the year.

Referee Marc Curles? crew called a personal foul on Arkansas defensive lineman Malcolm Sheppard in the fourth quarter as the Gators were rallying for a 23-20 victory. The league said there was no video evidence to support the call.

The same group of officials called the LSU-Georgia game earlier this month, which included a late unsportsmanlike conduct penalty the league said shouldn?t have been called.

?A series of calls that have occurred during the last several weeks have not been to the standard that we expect from our officiating crews,? SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday. ?I believe our officiating program is the best in the country. However, there are times when these actions must be taken.?

SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom said this is the first time the league has publicly suspended a football crew like this.

The SEC says the crew will be removed from its next scheduled assignment Oct. 31 and will not be assigned to officiate as a crew until Nov. 14.

The league said the crew?s bowl assignments could also be impacted.

?The entire crew shoulders responsibility for each play. I have taken this action because there must be accountability in our officiating program,? Slive said. ?Our institutions expect the highest level of officiating in all of our sports and it is the duty of the conference office to uphold that expectation.?

Good to see something being done about the horrible officiating. Too bad it didn't happen before the bow was put on the package for the Gators, but at least the SEC realizes there are issues with this crew and hopefully will take steps to fix the problem.

I didn't realize it was the same group that did the LSU-Georgia game. That's hilarious. Thank God this happened, those calls were TERRIBLE. Perhaps now the Gators fans who kept saying the calls were "ok" will be silenced.

Very interesting. Perhaps the AL and NL (baseball) should consider this for their crews that "mess up" calls.

If they come back, they should only be allowed to do the Vanderbilt and Miss State games.

Call, not calls. The UR call was absolutely horrible, others were ok.

Good, they were awful. That personal foul penalty wasn't the only call they blew, even on that drive alone.

Read the interview with the guy. He's a shitty ref. You don't call fouls for stuff you don't see. He didn't even see the Arkansas player hit the Florida player. How can you see a vicious blow out of the corner of you eye? Exactly, you cannot, and he even admits it. All he saw was the Florida player falling down. There was even a ref beside the 2 players that he could have been asked about the play, but he did not! It just shows this guy is horrible at reffing and needs to be replaced permanently.

Slightly biased source, but look here.

WOW, just watching those videos got me pissed. Refs totally gave that game to Florida on those calls. None of them should have been called. Hell the Unnecessary roughness call is a complete joke.

Yea every single one of those is a terrible call. They ref crew should be fired for good. How can you be that terrible at your job unless you're trying to give the game away, wow.

As to the pass interference calls. I hate that penalty. Refs in college and the NFL are so inconsistent with it that it has become bullshit. Half the time they wait for the player to whine before throwing the flag.

Personally I think pass interference should be a 10yrd penalty and 1st down, not the stupid NFL version of oh, you get it where the foul/nonfoul was. I've see so many times where QB's just bomb the ball (Manning/Brady do this a lot) down field and a corner looks at the receiver funny so the QB whines and gets a flag. Drives me nuts.

Good! Wasn't the same crew that got a warning on the celebration call?

-edit-
read the thread before you post
🙁

Interesting they are coming down this hard. Good for the SEC. And wasn't it an SEC ref (umpire) that stiff armed a QB run to the endzone last year?
