SEATTLE - Authorities evacuated dozens of workers and set up a half-mile perimeter around part of the city's port Wednesday after bomb-sniffing dogs indicated that two shipping containers from Pakistan could contain explosives.

Customs agents used a "gamma-ray" device at Terminal 18, south of downtown, to peer through the containers' steel walls and detected some items inside did not match the containers' manifest, agency spokesman Mike Milne said.

The containers were then subjected to the dogs, which raised concerns about explosives. A bomb squad that searched the containers found nothing dangerous.

Officials said the containers were supposed to contain oily rags, which are often shipped internationally for recycling or use in packaging. Authorities continued examining the cargo Wednesday afternoon.

It was not immediately clear why the dogs were mistaken.

Milne said the ship had originated in Hong Kong and made stops in China before arriving Monday in Seattle.

Terminal 18 covers nearly 200 acres, making it the port's largest container terminal and one of the largest in the nation. It serves more than 20 steamship lines and receives more than 40 vessels each month.

The Dems have been raising a stink since at least 2004 about the lack of real homeland security, including cargo inspection. all of our money goes to Iraq though, which is apparently what the GOP thinks is security.

Every time there's a report of a terror plot that was foiled (i.e. recent events in London) or something like this where authorities saw something suspicious and did the right thing by evacuating the area, the left immediately dismisses it as Republican scare tactics. I have to ask though, if none of these events constitute a real threat, why does the left keep screaming that we're not protecting ourselves. If every terror plot is a Republican ploy, what do we need to protect ourselves from?

Does a plot need to succeed in order to be considered real? I'm not even sure if that would be enough for some people. You still see crackpots insisting that 9/11 was an inside job of the current Admin.
