The SeaTools physical diagnostics passed. The drive is a Seagate Barracuda that I bought last August. Should I be concerned that the drive is failing, or could the problem be isolated to the file system?

Is SeaTools run from w/ in Windows? If so, uninstall it, re-install the app and retry it.

If you have Indexing Service turned off for the drive, Seatools diagnostics will report errors with the file system. I discovered this little bug over a year ago running Seatools on 4 Seagate drives, all of which are working fine today.

I experimented a bit with the Seagate SATA and PATA drives in my system. I could zero a drive, then initialize and format it, and a subsequent Seatools diagnostic scan would report no errors. If I then turned off indexing, Seatools reported errors with the file system. After booting the system, Seatools reported the errors as critical errors. If I then turned indexing on for the drive and rebooted the system, Seatools reported no problems with the drive.

On the other hand, you may indeed have issues with your drive. You may want to try another vendor?s drive diagnostic software for further diagnostics.

I can rule out the possibility of a false positive. The reason I'm testing my hard drive is that my system failed to load because boot.ini and system32/config/system had disappeared or been corrupted.

The results don't seem to indicate the number of reallocated sectors. The test just reports that the drive passed SMART.
