Searching for the right CPU.

I've been planning on building a PC but I'm not 100% certain which CPU would best fit my needs yet. What I'm planning on using the computer for is mainly Skype, screen recording, and the video game Minecraft (All at the same time). I'm currently looking at getting the Intel Core i5-4690K but wondering if this processor would be enough. Any help finding an appropriate CPU would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! :)

A 4690K will be enough for your needs and then some. Honestly, you would probably be fine with a Pentium, and an i3 (4160) would be more than adequate.

According to this month's issue of Maximum PC Magazine, the i5-4690K is the best bang-for-buck processor among the 4790K and the 5820K. I wouldn't know first-hand: I'm running these "old" Sandy Bridge K CPUs @ 4.7 Ghz with HyperThreading. 4690K doesn't give you HT, but you probably don't need it.

I've got two "monitors" connected to a single GTX 780 graphics card with an i7-2600K: My desktop monitor and my AVR/HDTV @ 1080p and 60hz refresh rate. I can watch LiveTV on the HDTV while playing a game on the desktop without a hitch or a strain.

It seems to me, unless you already have a 1440p or 4K monitor, you may not even have a specific monitor or graphics card in mind. But with that processor and a decent Z97 motherboard, you have a good basis for choosing additional parts and building a nice system. Plus! with the K processor and Z97, you can overclock it. Whether you "need" to do that, I couldn't say.

Somebody else have something to tell Austin here?

4690K sounds like massive overkill for the tasks listed, but it's a good value. OP could get away with spending half as much on a CPU, and use a cheaper H97, or even B85/H81-based motherboard.

I wouldn't doubt that, either. It boils down partly to what you say there given his listed intentions, and budget priorities.

If he just "needs" a computer and wants to spend no more than necessary, we can look at price differences of $10 to $100+ in each item. If he "wants" to build a computer for "unforeseen needs and wants," it might be less important to pinch pennies.

What, for instance, is the difference in a non-K quad-core Haswell and the 4690K he's looking at? It looks like it might be $50. And the motherboard: a budget Z97 board like an ASUS Z97-A, Gigabyte or AsRock would run between $100 and $140 (ASUS). There's an H97 board priced as low as $70.

OP will probably come back responding to our remarks. We'll probably both be interested in his thoughts about the money and his desires.

Truth is, Yuriman also had a valid point about an i3 processor, and certainly Minecraft is not to be compared to this "Witcher" thing or other more hardware-demanding games.

Heck! For Skype and mostly business apps, I can use a 2007 Centrino-Duo laptop with a wireless connection!

I agree with Aten on this one. An i3 or Athlon x4 with a mid range dgpu would be the safest choice. Minecraft will run in an igp, but it can be fairly demanding with a few mods or things like that. But if the OP has extra to spend, cant hurt to get a 4690k and z97. Or even a pre-built i3 with an add in GTX750/750Ti would be a good choice.

i3 4160 + Gigabyte H97-D3H. Full ATX mobo but has M.2/SATA Express and ALC 1150 all for $80 or so.
