Searching for a job out of state . . .

I'm looking for a job out of state (in California specifically) and was wondering if anybody has any suggestions for the best way to go about it. I'm just concerned that with the volume of people looking for work out there an out of towner might not get considered.

Would it be a good idea to use the address of a local friend when applying?
