1-19-2005 FBI Investigating 'Dirty Bomb' Threat in Boston

BOSTON - The FBI said on Wednesday it was investigating a report of a "dirty bomb" threat in Boston, but called the information "uncorroborated."

ABC News reported on Wednesday that teams equipped with radiological sensors were patrolling Boston amid a possible "dirty bomb" threat, but local police said they had no information.

"I haven't heard that we're out there with radiological sensors," said Boston FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz. "Right now all I can tell you is the information that we have has not been corroborated. We have shared the information with our law enforcement partners and we're working aggressively to resolve it."

The ABC News report, broadcast over local Boston radio station WBZ, said an FBI field office in San Diego notified colleagues in Boston that someone may be trying to detonate a dirty bomb in the city.

Marcinkiewicz declined to comment on the source of the information but she noted that the FBI "gets information like this all the time." She would not speculate as to why this particular report had generated so much media interest.

so I guess Drudge's headline was correct?

There is no confirmation that there is a bomb in Boston... the closest thing is that the guys that were smuggled into the country were planning on sending "materials"

Besides, Kerry is supposed to be an Al Queda supporter right? Boston is perfectly safe by the neocon reasoning

Wrong, ask France how appeasing has slowed the attacks and attempted attacks?

Like France is a US city.

If they want to get rid of Bush, why not strike DC? Answer? They don't want to.

Most likely though this is another false alarm. I hope so.

Boston Officials Alerted About Possible Terror Suspects

Text

This is huge news, otherwise the FBI, CIA and Homeland Security wouldnt take it as serious.

Well it still says it's uncorroborated, which to me suggests they got a threat, but have no other reason to be suspicious. I hope they take it seriously, but I suspect it would be VERY easy to provoke the same reaction from them with one phone call.

In any case, hopefully more details will come up and this won't be "huge news" based off of nothing more than an uncorroborated report. Although it's about terrorism, so I'm not holding my breath that a reasonable response from the news media will appear.

They just interrupted programming here and showed the four pictures of the Chinese people that the authorities are looking for.

Authorities searching For 4 Chinese, 2 Iraqis

Suspects reportedly have nuclear material

Islamic Terror sites claiming "The Horserace is on - while they chase the horses, the bird will fly"

19 January 2005; 6:05 EDT: Sources close to the Northeast Intelligence Network have verified initial, unsubstantiated reports that authorities are searching for a radiological or "dirty" bomb and nuclear material in the hands of 6-8 men - 4 Chinese, 2 iraqis and others - in the area from Boston to Washington, DC. Multiple sources have indicated that authorities suspect DC as a likely target to disrupt tomorrow's inauguration.

A law enforcement source, speaking under the condition of anonymity, stated that authorities are searching for 6-8 men, reportedly from Iraq accompanied by suspects of Asian origin- with science backgrounds. More information is being developed...

I think you need to understand that a dirty bomb is more of a scare than a threat. Where you are, you are perfectly safe.

I read a while back that a bunch of European scientists carefully evaluated the threat of a so-called dirty bomb, and determined that even if you were in it's vicinity when it went off, you would receive no more radiation than you would pick up from a chest x-ray. I.e., relax.

I'm bunkering down in my apartment because of this. I've boarded my windows up and barricaded my doors. I already have 150 gallons of water stockpiled along with 40 loaves of bread, 10 gallons of milk, and a box of lucky charms cereal.

Yeah, it couldn't be any worse than Chernobyl, the biggest dirty-nuke accident in history.

Not surprising, though. Bush has to keep the fear-mongering going in order to keep people believing in his administration's lies.

What's your new excuse because your first two haven't panned out. First it was a bash on Drudge, then on Bush - neither of which had anything to do with it. First off, Drudge broke that the FBI had put out an alert. Second(which is also contained in the first) - the FBI put out the alert based on information given to them that they are trying to verify. It has nothing to do with Bush trying to scare people like you continually bleat.

But hey, step up to the plate again conjur - afraid of striking out....again?

Oh, and anyone want to ponder who'd be the first person in here to spew bile at Bush if none of this had been made public and something actually happened? I know who I'd put my money on...

There was actual nuclear fission taking place at Chernobyl (that was out of the control of the technicians), wasn't there?

to be honest, a dirty nuke would not do much damage. its just a weapon for chaos, thats the intent of it, other than that its not a weapon that should scare a lot of people

A so-called dirty bomb is just a conventional (i.e., non-nuclear) bomb which has a bit of radioactive junk metal (or whatever other radioactive substance) added in. The idea is that the radioactive particles will be distributed into the atmosphere when the bomb goes off. Chernobyl pumped vast quantities of radioactive dust into the atmosphere. You're not going to get that with a small, conventional bomb containing a bit of radioactive material.

I'm surprised Chinese Nationals were involved in this incident. Hopefully they won't be tied back to the government else we'll have big problems
