I have had it happen to me. More times then you can guess. 95% of the time i have received a refurbished drive back. why the fvck should you get a new one? you sent them a used drive.

though every time i have done it i received a bigger drive then i sent them. but you wont. they have marked it in your file that you are a clueless dickwad. so you will get a ****** one that was refurbished by "Fred the alcoholic" on a Friday evening.

Dear Waggy,
I don't even work on Friday evening, that is when I do my best drinking!
your pal,
Fred

Why do people tend to think they deserve so much more than they should really get? I don't understand the problem here. You have a problem with a drive that is 3 months old. You will get a refurbished drive that will still be under a 5 year warranty. What's the big deal?

If something broke on a new car purchase only 5% of the way into the warranty would the dealership fix the broken part or hand you a new car?

Actually a long time ago i did have a seagate go bad, they replaced it with a refurb that was a little larger than my original and its still running now a couple years past the warranty end. Stop acting like a nancy boy and be realistic.

A refurb for using like 5% of my Warr, does not seem right!! They will not approve a next step up. Also NO reason given why they did not inform me of not being able to ship 2 weeks ago. I have NO doubt they would have Never got in touch. And don't any of these people speak CLEAR English? They all sound like they got marbles in their mouth.

You sound like a real thrill to be speaking with over the phone, or in any fashion for that matter.

Get lost. You're totally unreasonable with your lawyer crap. A new harddrive with more capacity will cost you ~100 bucks, might as well get a new one instead of a lawyer.

I deal with warranty support on a daily basis here at work. I call all kinds of vendors and sometime you have to wait.

BTW, You're 1st post should have been to your blog, not here. We don't care.

Dude. Do what everyone else does. BUY A NEW DRIVE. Then when you get your "refurbished" crap from seagate, dump it on ebay for as much as you can get for it.

That is all.

Hard drive companies NEVER replace your drive with a new drive. It is always refurbished. That said, I've had no problems with any of the refurb drives I have gotten.

I RMA'd a drive (model #ST3400632A, 400gb pATA, 16MB cache) on May 21st, and still haven't gotten a replacement. When I called about 5 minutes ago, I was told they didn't have any drives in stock to ship me, but would switch me to waiting on a 500gb sATA and overnight shipping. The rep also said some people have been waiting since March for their drives. I've RMA'd a few with Seagate before, and usually get my replacement within 2 weeks from when they receive it. Anyone else having this kind of problem?

I can't disagree that it seems unreasonable to offer a warranty and then replace with refurbished stock especially on such a new drive. It means that you effectively bought a refurbished unit with a 5 year warranty for a new price.

Having said that, fierce competition has forced manufacturers to find ways to save money. The easiest way to save money is through reduced after sales service.

I can't blame them.

I would recommend that you adjust your expectations from getting a new item with a warranty to getting a refurbished item with a 5 year warranty. It will be easier to swallow.

Man expectations are low. 2 weeks - what happens if that is your central drive and your machine is out of commision for 2 weeks waiting for the replacement.

Bad analogy - the vast majority of the car is still 95% new. The only part that isn't is the piece that was replaced.

If Seagate fixed the drive and replace just the bad piece, then it would be a good analogy.

OP is sending in a drive where 100% of the pieces are 3 months old.

He is getting a drive where the vast majority of the drive is older than the one he sent in.

Then you don't buy an off the shelf drive to put in your uber-important machine. If you want immediate service, you pay for it. Consumer products aren't priced with immediate service behind them. Why are people's expectations so high with prices so low?

If my car breaks down under warranty and it takes 2 weeks to fix, the dealership gives me a loaner. Why is this different?

Why does the manufacturer's problem become mine?

if you're gonna call your lawyer over a $50 hard drive, you should atleast try to start a class action lawsuit to make it worthwhile.

While your at it, have your laywer look into the drive size being 250,000,000,000 bytes instead of the 268,435,456,000 bytes the label makes you think it really is.

If a computer was that critically crucial, it should be using raid mirroring for starters. Or you buy your system from a vendor and pay him well through a SLA.
