Seagate vs. Western Digital Hard Drives

I'm getting a new HD this weekend, and I want to know... which would you guys perfer as a hard drive? I hear Seagates are very quiet, but are there any noticable differences?

i had an IBM 75GXP....it was pretty fast, but this week, it started to die...so i got a seagate barracuda IV...it's a little faster and i can't hear the damn thing. i have to look at the hdd LED to see if it's working. i can't speak for a WD, but i can say that barracuda IV is fast and whisper quiet

Well I've had many Western Digitals, both retail and OEM, and have never had
a problem with any of them........Greg

I had 2 WD that had no problems, 1 that had data corruption problem for no apparent reason (no virus and no overclocking) but the replacement is just fine. I had problems with a 1.6gig Maxtor drive that was pretty noisy, but not as much as the Quantum Fireball +KA that I have in another computer.

I now have a WD in my computer and it works just fine but I'm going to sell it to my GF and buy me a nice Seagate for noise concerns (not that the WD is noisy, I just want the most quiet system I can have).

The difference is that Seagate's noise will be very hard to hear, if you can hear it at all. But WD is easily the faster of the two.

My observation:

WD SE - loud, faster
Seagate Barracuda IV - quiet, hotter

Otherwise they are basically the same. If you get WD that is non 8MB cache, then I believe that the Seagate will outperform it.

Get the Seagate! The most reliable, quiet and fast drives you can buy. On the other hand, brand may not matter a lot. Personally, I have never had a HD fail on me.

We sell Seagates Barracuda ATAIV drives at work and out of the last 150-200 we have only had one go bad due to hardware failure. With my 40G model I have in my pc I consistently get 35/Mbs read and write performance and you have to to stick your ear to it to hear anything.

I've had 2 western digitals die on me, but I still buy em because when the work they're damn nice drives... It doesn't matter to me about noise (c'mon, it's a computer, they're supposed to make noise right?) because I've got 3 computers running in the same room (main rig, server, and a secondary rig) and they're all noisy as hell (fans) so it don't matter...

Western Digital's pretty good about replacing their drives too if they go bad (hell the referbished ones I got back from mine dying were better than the original 😀)

I haven't delt with seagate really, I know maxtors are damn nice drives also...

Why settle for only one bread when you can get them all for health reason lol. Too many of the same thing is going to make anyone sick in the long run. That why I buy them all from Maxtor, Seagate, IBM, Fujitsu, Samsung, WD, Quantum ah you name it LOL. like stock you should never invest all your money into one company, you never know which will go dead on you and then you're broke.

Hard drive technology has evolved to the point where the difference between manufacturer's products is more a factor of their respective marketing departments than anything else. Popular belief iholds that Seagate drives are marginally quieter while WD drives are marginally faster. The truth is, you can't go wrong with either one. (Which is why I have an 80GB Seagate Barracuda IV in the wife's system and a WD 100GB (the 8MB buffer version) in mine.)

It gets down to this:

Seagate: slower drive, smaller cache, much quieter, costs less.
WD SE drives: faster drive, larger cache, noisier, costs more.

Determine for yourself what you would want and what is important to you.

The Seagate Barracuda IV series will be a little slower than the comparable Western Digital models, but they'll also be much quieter. And that alone is enough reason to prefer the Seagate, IMHO.
