seagate sata drive owners. are your drives loud?

this is my 4th or 5th seagate but my first sata seagate. all the ata ones are pretty much silent, but this sucker is loud when it's seeking. it's almost as bad as my raptor.

anyone else out there with this problem? I need to know because I got this from Frys, and it was obvious that it was a return. I had to get it because it was the very last one in the store.

thanks in advance.

its loud because it has an aggressive seek setting... i don't think you can change the acoustic managment on the 7200.7s. my brother has the same drive its pretty loud at times but not all the time. the pata version has a less agressive setting... which is also why it's slower. 🙁

The new SATA drives with the NCQ are not that loud... At least not the pair of 250GB drives that are inside my rig. Of course, depending on your case, it might amplify the sounds that the drives make. If your Seagate drive doesn't have the NCQ, return it for one that does.

I think "loud" is just too varied from person to person to label it as a definitive. I have the same 160GB in mine and can't hear it. The 2 100CFM 120mm fans drown it out I'm sure. So, in my situation, anything lower than a jet-engine, I would call "quiet".

A loud HDD doesn't bother me. After all, it's better than a clicking one...

In my Dell XPS Gen4, I can change the settings on the drives from performance to quiet and a few other settings. I have it on performance so they're a bit louder than normal, but they're really fast. When they're on the quiet setting, I cannot hear them at all.
