Hello,
i have recently replaced the HDD for my laptop with a new Seagate Momentum Thin 2.5mm 500gb 7200 RPM disk. Previous configuration was 5400 RPM disk Toshiba (if that makes a difference).

Clicking Noise Issues Pre OS Install
I Installed it on my laptop. However, after the installing and turning on the PC (NO OS no formatting done) i get a continuous Clicking Noise.

Post OS Install Pre Boot
This was worrying, later i installed the Operating System and then the Noise would come till the time windows logo shows up (pre boot). Now, i get the noise when powering on the laptop, before the windows logo shows up.

My questions are:
Is this normal ?
I checked the documentation for Seagate for this and it shows its normal for occasional clicking sound
According to Seagate offcial docs such behaviour is termed as "Normal" [Point 2]

I have already read lot of comments saying clicking=death and all.

Appreciate the comments.

Nope, not normal. Sounds like you got a bad drive out of the box. They should make an occasional click and crunching noises while in operation, but not a continuous clicking.

@daveybrat , thanks for the inputs. I would like to clarify.

Pre OS Install
The firs time i installed the hdd and powered on the system, the drive was clicking continuously. This is when no formatting or no os was installed.
This repeated each time i tried to power on the system.

Post OS Install,
I installed the Win10 via bootable USB. Now the noise is occasional, some clicks before the OS logo is seen.

Diagnostics,
I got SeaTools and ran Long Generic test (1h 40m aprox) that gave all green status.

Does this still count to be problematic ?

P.S.: i have raised a support request with Seagate as well, but i understand its here i can get unbiased inputs.

You will hear a clicking when the heads park/unpark.

If it is continuous, then that is a bad HD.

Seatools don't catch everything, basically, the long test did a surface scan.

There are many different sounds that could be described as a click. I am not sure if you ever heard the "click of death" from which the phrase originated, but there were other sounds involved iirc, not just a click. If a click is all you are hearing, I don't know that it would be time to panic just yet.

And since the drive is well within the warranty period, I would recommend calling Seagate for their recommendation.

While you are at it, I would recommend you get the date code off the drive, so you will know exactly when the warranty is up:

The click of death is a well known indicator or harbinger of doom. Be prepared.
