Seagate increasing drive warranties to 5 years

rip from Bensbargains:

Word on the street is that Seagate has made a bold move to increase their standard hard drive warranty to an unmatched 5 years. This comes as other manufacturers have stepped down from their former 3-year warranties to shorter 1-year warranties. It seems that Seagate is now a no-brainer!

Update: I called their warranty division. Confirmed. All Seagate drive purchases from July 1st onwards are covered by a 5-year warranty.

way to go seagate!

I personally own 6 Seagate hard drive. 2 IDE & 4 SCSI. None of those give me any trobles. While in the last 3 years, I had 2x IBM, 2x WD and 4x Maxtor HDD die on me. I don't think it will cost Seagate to much to give 5 yr warranty for their drives.

...

Oh sweet! that makes my uprade to a barracuda v 7200.7 160GB feel so much easier! icedentally my old 5400 40GB barracuda has lasted me 3 and a half years and is till more reliable and quieter than most of my friends drives

Next time I'm buying a drive, I'll definitely give segate a better look. I ususally buy Maxtor or Hitachi (IBM)

Purchased from July 1st? For some reason I'm thinking it would be the manufactured date since that's the date on the drive itself.

Ya, this is pretty big.

I wish Seagate would be a bit more aggressive with their HD lineup though - make two versions of the 'cuda - quiet (pretty much like those now) and faster (albeit a bit noisier) to push WD and Hitachi bit more (I guess this applies a lot more to the PATA drives I'm still using. The 7200.7 I bought for my old PIII system is great for the former reason.

The drive maker will also honor the five-year warranty on older models that may be sitting on store shelves, a Seagate representative said, although the warranty was designed to be applied to drives shipping to distributors after June 1.

Maybe the 7200.7 I got in June will get a 5-year warranty too!

Looks like my next drive will be a Seagate.

Heck yeah!!

This is a bold move by Seagate; they are sure to capture the lion's share of the HD market now.

One drive maker reduces warranties to one year, and others follow.
Now one increases theirs to five. It'd be nice if the others would start going after this trend instead.

wow, what's seagate's rma service like? quick and easy like WD?

I dunno WD's, but Seagate's RMA service is flawless. Practically zero hold time, I got ahold of someone in the know who was able to comprehend I had already used their "SeaTools Diagnostics", and got an RMA in an e-mail shortly afterward. Only downside is that they're a little picky about how you package the drives while shipping to them.

Can't think of 2 worse hard drive brands (IBM and Maxtor) DEFINITELY give Seagate a look.. they rock.

The 3 I've done have been painless and quick.

It's the 3 out 5 Seagate drives that bothers me. I'll still keep buying them though.

Not looking for a Hard Drive, but this kinda makes Seagate the top contender. OTOH, this move is probably to spur more Sales as Seagate has been losing a lot of money recently, which adds a risk that Seagate could cease to exist within the Warranty period. If they survive though, having 5 years Warranty is a no lose situation for the Consumer(other than possible Data loss).

why not advance rma? i like those for being able to return in their box as much as getting the item sooner

Seagate isn't going anywhere. They are the biggest HD manufacturer in the world. The loss from last quarter mostly came from offering early retirement packages and paying severence to about 3000 employees let go world wide. I know, I work there. :frown:

Also if you compare their loss in one quarter to the many losing quarters of Maxtor and WD over the last few years, Seagate is probably the most stable.

Another thing. When these companies offer these warranties, funds have to be set aside to cover those warranties. Maxtor went to a 1 year warranty to free up some of that money because of cash flow problems last year. I don't think Maxtor has the cash to offer a 5 year warranty on consumer drives. But I agree it would be nice if all drives had that kind of warranty because it will take quality to back it up which is good for all of us whichever drive we buy!

🙂

Seagate rules. Quite drives and now 5 year warranties. Now if only they would make a drive to compete with the Raptor.

I was telling my co-workers about the new warranty and one of them (who is notorious for being an arrogant and questionably opinionated) said "there's a reason why they do that", and he was being negative. I didn't bother arguing with him, because it proves futile, and because I don't like to converse much with him anyways. Sigh, stupid people....
