Seagate hard drive package labeling question...

I was about to grab a Seagate 400 Gb pata drive at Fry's yesterday ($240 after $50 rebate) but I was worried by the fact that the package labeling made no mention of "Baracuda" or "7200.8" anywhere.

Could I have been looking at a non 7200.8 version of the drive or do they just label their products poorly. It was a 7200 rpm 8 meg buffer though, can I assume that is what the 7200.8 refers to?

I've not seen a better price for that drive online but this nagging question keeps me from pulling the trigger.

I think the 8's are sata only although I may be wrong.

Every hard drive I have has a labal on top of the hard drive it self with a model number including seagate.

You actully need that model number for RMA.

Its probably a 7.

Any way to tell from the packaging if the drive is a Baracuda 7200.8?

All the packaging said was Seagate ATA 7200 RPM 8 Meg Buffer. How can I be sure I'm getting the most recent version of this drive and not a 7200.7?

Whats wrong with the 7's?

I have two and they are fine,

Like I said I THINK 8's are sata only.

Check the labal on the hard drive it self like I said before.

Well the 7200.7 drives only went up to 200gb in size so the 400gb has to be the 7200.8 generation. It's when they moved up to 133gb platters and i'm pretty certain they only use a maximum of 3 platters in a drive.

Edit: They are available in both pata and sata, here's a linkyfor a pata one:

If the packaging said 'Seagate ATA 7200 RPM 8 Meg Buffer' i'd be inclined to think it was parallel ata rather than sata. You'd have thought it would have mentioned sata if it had it.

Actually I need a 400 SATA for my rig and a 400 PATA for my NexStar 3 external enclosure. I was not implying anything wrong with the .7's, just that I want the latest version of the drive.

Sounds like I'll just buy it and find out for sure, I can always return it to Fry's if needed.
