I've been looking at getting a Seagate Barracuda but I have no idea what to go w/... The 7200.7? The 7200.8? 😵

The rig I'm going to buy will be:

Amd Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 939
DFI UT Lanparty NF4 Ultra-D
Seasonic S12 430 Watt
Sennheiser PC150 + Audigy 2 ZS
eVGA 6800GT
Ram - still pending, looking at Twinmos Winbond UTT
Lian-Li PC7B Plus
Thermalright XP-90 + Arctic Silver 5

If this matters at all... which it probably doesn't... but I might as well get even MORE comments and suggestions on my rig on top of the 342432423425 topics I've made.
 
Latest isn't always the greatest. Version .7 and .8 are quite loud compared to older versions. If you're looking for performance, check storagereview.com and see what's on the top right now.
 
If you are not going SLI I would seriously consider ATI (either X800XL or X850XL).
Other than that looks great.
 
I know the latest versions would usually be the better ones but I'm just wondering if there's that much ofa performance difference between them.
 
How does the x800xl compare to the 6600GT? I have been debating whether to spend a little more and go with the x800xl.
 
definitaly go with the x800. I had a 6600gt for about a week before it died on me. For and extra $100 I got twice the performance of the 6600gt.

btw, the 6600 was a xfx(shudder) card

The 7200.8 is a great HDD. IMHO it's not loud at idle or during seeks, unlike my 74GB Raptor which does have noisy seeks at times. The 7200.8 also runs relatively cool to the touch, offers good performance, and has a stellar 5yr. warranty.

I actually have to disagree. I had (was it called) an ATA V 80gig Barracuda and that drive had such an annoying high pitched squeak that would drive you absolutely nuts if your ears could hear it. Sure the 7200.7 I now have little louder clicks on seeking, it does not have that annoying high pitched squeak anymore - AND I never even noticed the clicks really until I replaced the cpu & gpu fans with Zalman's. The 7200.7 does start clicking away for some odd reason after a minute or so of inactivity, not sure what that's all about, but it's not adversely affecting anything. Maybe it's that s.m.a.r.t. technology at work?

Don't know about the 7200.8s though, haven't used one yet.
 
Storage Review are used to 15k RPM SCSI drives. Of course Raptors won't sound loud to them. Trust me, you will notice the Raptor when it's running. It's the loudest drive in my system. I'd go with the Barracuda 7200.8 drives because it's the latest generation.
 
I am also looking for a new Hard drive, going seagate. The thing is that have I have 320 GB of data on IDE Hd's that I would need to transfer over...... :-( Figure Updgrade to SATA transfer my 200GB MP3 collection, then Sell the old IDE on Ebay or something.
 
I've got a 200GB 7200.7 Its great. I would imagine the 7200.8 might be a touch faster. $45 dollars faster? probably not. It depends on your budget. I think the only real advantage the .8 has is NCQ which isn't really going to help a desktop system all that much. In fact I think it can actually slow some applications down.
 
Go with the 7200.8. Your the NForce4 chipset supports NCQ and with the sole exception of the 160GB 7200.7, the only Seagate drives that support NCQ are the .8s. Thus, I'd say go with any of the .8s (of which I think the 250GB model provides the lowest $/GB) or the 160GB 7200.7 w/ NCQ.

I've got a pair of the .7s and they're pretty quiet. I can't distinguish them at idle, but I've also got a Raptor and several loud fans. During an intensive read or write, they are audible, but not annoyingly so.

And you can't beat the warranty.

OK, I stand corrected. However, the 250GB Seagate is still the best $/GB buy for a Seagate SATA drive (at least based on current prices at Newegg)
