Seagate Barracuda V w/ Serial ATA and 8MB cache on its way...

Barracuda ATA V builds on the proven technology of its extremely successful and reliable predecessor, Barracuda ATA IV - today's leading 7,200-rpm product. The new Barracuda ATA V is ideal for high-performance PCs, home entertainment PCs, Network-Attached Storage (NAS) and entry-level ATA servers. In fact, virtually any PC application will benefit from the increased performance offered by 7,200-rpm disc drives. Mainstream applications see performance boosts of as much as 44 percent, PCs boot faster and load applications faster, and users perform everyday tasks faster. Barracuda ATA V has the world's fastest PC hard drive internal transfer rate at up to 570 Mbits per second, and a 9-msec seek time. The Ultra ATA/100 version features a 2-Mbyte cache, and the Serial ATA version will sport an 8-Mbyte cache, the largest on any PC hard drive.

Wow!!

That's going to be great! Today I installed a Barracuda of a Mac (The quantum HD it had died) and I was shocked at how quiet they were.:Q

Hopefully this will allow Seagates hard drives to perform as good as the Western digital 120JB drives and still be quiet. If that's the case, I may replace my current WD 120gigJB with one of the seagates.

Hmmmm that would be some interesting benchmarks ..... SerialATA 'cuda w/ 8MB Cache vs WDs 8MB Cache drive. (I know we're talking this fall for the SATA version so WD will have something else out by then or perhaps they'll just update their drive to SATA).

The last cuda left a bad taste in my mouth due to it's poor access time, I think I'll wait for Western Digital or Maxtors next generation drives.

I wonder if this 'Cuda V can even be more quiet, as in virtual near silence, than the 'Cuda IV. Time Displacement Fluid Dynamic Bearings? 😉

That is what I'm hoping😀

I want my next system to be near silent.

Looks like like my WD 1200JB just got fossilized.

Does anyone have an idea as to when it will be released and how much this drive (and others I'm sure) will cost?
Should I hold out on building a new computer this summer to wait for this (currently have a P3 450 that chugs along sorta ok)?

Nice to see the WD 8meg buffer isn't going to be the end of 8meg buffers. Seemed to help a bunch, hopefully some nice big (silent) buffers will shut up people yapping about "where are the 10k ATA drives".

Until Seagate has an advanced RMA replacement policy like WD, Maxtor, Samung, etc, I will stay away from them..

It's Maxtor for me..

According to storagereview it "should ship next month."
