Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB harddrive problem.

I ran SiSoft SANDRA 2002 (non pro ver) to test out my harddrive with the File System Benchmark and my drive recieves a 4093. Now this seems very low as SiSoft compares it to an ATA U66 7200 28GB with 17000 and an ATA U100 7200 30GB with 24000. Something seems very wrong.

My specs:

MB: ECS K7S5A
HD: Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB (ST380021A)
One partition with NTFS.
OS: Win2K SP2
CPU: AMD XP 1700+
MEM: 512MB (2x256 PC133)

My BIOS is set to auto detect the HD and settings. And like the other message about the WD, I tried to check the Primay IDE Channel for Transfer mode and it's reporting PIO (and not DMA).

Help! Thanks.

Don't jump on me if you already did this. I hesitate to suggest anything seeing as you're a "GURU" and will obviously done all the basics. 😛
A) You didn't accidently use a 40 pin cable instead of the 80 pin?
B) Make sure the setting for your HD/IDE channel in your system/device manager is set to use DMA if available.
I figure you have both taken care of, but they're the only things I could think of. I know you said you checked the BIOS settings for your HD and primary IDE channel, but you didn't mention if you checked the Win2K settings too.

"Guru" is a moniker like calling a big guy "Slim" hahahahah

Back to the issue. I am using a cable for ATA133 (even though the drive is ATA100). Actually, it's a rounded cable from PCMODS.COM. I'll switch it out with the original that came with the MB and see if that does anything.

The Transfer Mode in the Advance Settings is set to DMA if possible. Device Type is Auto Detect and greyed out. Current Transfer Mode is PIO MODE and greyed out. UGH.

The only other thing I can think of to try would be to change how the IDE devices are setup. IF you have a second device (CD/ATAPI?) on the IDE0 with your HD, you might want to try moving it to your IDE1 (2nd channel) and leave the HD alone on the first channel.

Original ATA100 cables posted similar results in SiSoft SANDRA. Seagate is the only device on IDE 0. The CDROM and DVDROM are on IDE1.

Thanks for the suggestions though Danzilla...

A follow up on the problem...

Had to reload Win2K, install SP2, switch the HD to PIO mode, reboot, switch the HD to DMA IF POSSIBLE and now the HD is hitting normal scores for a 7200 ATA100 drive!
