Use the link above to the HardOCP thread. There is a link there to the firmware upgrade that doesn't require burning to a CD or writing to a floppy. If you have other means of booting to DOS then you can just extract those files to the device and run the update when at the command prompt.

I am having an extremely frustrating time trying to flash my drive. Which firmware do I use? My floppy is the biggest POS as it will not sustain any files transferred.

Any ideas?

I would call Seagate and get the firmware update from them. They emailed me mine. Then if you brick your hard drive doing there update you should have no problems getting a replacement drive from them.

Then I ordered 2 more drives so I could expedite getting the new drives by repurchasing so I will need to wait for newegg to send my credit card a refund. One of the 2 drives on that shipment failed out of box also :( so did same get one refund - buy 1 more new drive and now I finally have 4 drives working atm. The thing is when you order a bulk drive you get imho a better chance receiving a damaged drives from all the extra packing and shipping. I dont know what kind lack quality control could be going on with these drives that are could be causing problems. That said I flashed the drives that needed an update I haven t seen any problems since installed.

I also think that newegg's (horrible) packaging of the HDs plays a big factor on DOA units. Were the drives shipped out by the NJ warehouse?

Elixer,
I just checked the shipping and yes all drives were shipped from NJ.

wow seagate is really screwing up their rep with this fiasco.

turns out the firmware on the less than 1.5TB 7200.11 drives, didnt detect drives properly, so they released a new image that did it correctly except the flash for 500gb drives was corrupt and bricks drives... nice one seagate.

Too bad I had to pay $20 to RMA my 640GB drive with this issue. Oh well, will update my replacement when they finish releasing the new firmware for this version.

:disgust:
From all the people I have known, that get HDs from newegg, that have had issues, were 'packaged' & shipped from NJ.
Last time, my HD came packed in foam peanuts, and some bubblewrap around it, in a box 3x as big as the HD. Time before that, they wrapped it in some packing paper. I was like WTF!?!?:|

If people don't complain to newegg about the terrible job that the NJ warehouse is doing, they will not fix things.

Needless to say, I stopped getting any HDs from the egg, and now go with zipzoomfly. They pack the drive in a foam sleave, then add air pillow packs around it.

Thanks to all that helped me flash my drive.

In case anyone is having similar problems as I am, I have the following drive that had the following firmware before the flash:

Model: st31500341as
Firmware: sd19

I used firmware 8HSD1A.BAT found on newegg to flash my drive. Took me forever to find a working floppy disk and turned it into a boot disk. There is not sufficient space to put all the files onto the floppy so I put the firmware files on a flash drive and changed the directory after my machine booted from my A: drive.

So far, the pauses while streaming video files has stopped or is almost non-existent.

Also, Seagate never emailed me back.

Or you could have made the flash drive bootable. That would make having a floppy drive pretty much useless.

I tried several ways to do it, but none of them worked. Tried downloading the HP utility and using Win98 files and no go. I guess my specific flash drive isn't able to be booted from? It's a PNY 128mb Attache.

I also tried to make a bootable cd-rom, but that didn't work either. Nero kept giving me an error.

I think that day was the perfect storm.

Can you see it in the BIOS as a boot device. Usually it shows up as a hard disk in the hard drive boot order.

Be CAREFUL if you have a 500GB 7200.11...the new SD1A firmware WILL BRICK A WORKING DRIVE!!!! That's why they pulled it off the Seagate website.

The SD1A firmware is back up @ Seagate's site, Link

FWIW, I just updated my affected ST3500320AS with it, and it's still a 500GB HD, not a brick. Vista re-detected it as a new drive, and all seems well.

Damn...my lab is finally coming in to some funding for a HUGE fileserver we need to build. I take it these 1.5TB drive aren't the way to go?

I updated my 640GB ST3640323AS (P/N 9FZ134-300) from SD13 to SD1B. Didn't have any issues prior and so far the new firmware is working fine.

with the firmware update they work fine.

if you are willing to flash firmware, its a great way to get cheap drives, since everyone is discounting this because of the mass hysteria.

Hello Everyone,

Last evening I downloaded and installed the latest Seagate firmware for my six (6) 7200.11 drives (ST31500341AS). I had previously upgraded those drives with the SD1A firmware. The new version is SD1B. It installed just fine, and I was able to reboot the machine without any problems.

For those undertaking this firmware upgrade, be VERY sure to disconnect all hard drives EXCEPT the single drive you are upgrading. The new firmware utilizes an ISO file to burn the necessary upgrade files to a CD-ROM for installation - it worked very well for me.

I sure hope that Seagate has finally gotten all the bugs worked out of the firmware for these drives. Good Luck to everyone else who does this upgrade, but, as I said, it worked just fine for me.

Best regards to everyone. TheBeagle

I got a 640gb version of 7200.11 series. sd13->sd1B, so far so good. Even though it said I don't need this upgrade but I have experiences BIOS non detection for a few times probably not as bad as other drives in the series but still got hit. After update noticed the access timegone from 13ms to 16ms. wonder what other people's experiences on this new sd1b are?

I just picked up the Seagate 1.5TB 7200.11 Hard drive (computer shows ST31500341AS but retail packages is marked as ST315005N1A1AS-RK) from Frys for $129.99 the other day. Awsome deal for the retail package. (got a nice Molex to SATA power converter and an SATA cable out of the deal too!)

It was in a new, smaller retail package, and had a newer serial number than the 1TB drives that were right next to it. When I got it home, it had the CC1H firmware on it, and the Seagate website says this firmware doesn't have the problem, and not to flash it. :)

Popped it into my machine, and ran into a problem straight away....couldn't format the thing. Looks like the issue may be the nvidia chipset and the nforce drivers.

I worked around the issue by connecting the drive as an external USB drive, and it formatted just fine, no problems.

Then, I disconnected it from USB, and put it back into the machine and Eureka, sucess, the drive was there, and formatted.

Anyway, the drive sounds good (no clicking), feels good (not too hot), and works good (fast as heck).

I have 30 days to get the drive back to Frys in case there are any problems. After that, I have a full 5 year warrenty (printed right on the box in 4 separate places).

This is a purely storage drive for video and music. Nothing mission critical here. My OS drive is a 150GB WD Raptor so if there are any problems, I'm not offline.

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know, there are newer (retail) drives out there that don't have the firmware issue. (well, no firmware issues *reported* that is!)

I believe this is worth picking up if you want a good deal, don't need it for mission critical stuff, and are not afraid of utilizing a warrenty if necessary.
