I don't think I'll be buying anything but Barracudas myself anymore, even the "quiet" drives from others aren't quiet in comparison. You do give up some performance by comparison, but still plenty fast.

I have a WD Caviar SE 80 GB... I don't think it's loud... but then again, I have 5 case fans not including the ones in the power supply, so maybe I don't notice it... but I did have a Seagate Baracuda IV... and I don't mean to start an argument... but it was a turd... slower than molases in January. Only difference in noise I noticed was I NEVER heard the Seagate read/write... and every once in a while after a large download where it transfers the file from a temp directory to the location I saved it in, I can hear the WD thrashing a litte... but I definately don't notice any hidiously loud noises.

Maybe you don't do anything that puts stress on the hard drive. In fact, I can almost say for sure you don't if you can't feel a difference in performance.
Another thing... show me a Baracuda IV that scores over 1000 in PCMark 2001... I dare you.

I can feel a difference between 5400rpm ATA33 drives and 7200 rpm Cuda IV's and 15K Cheetahs while using windows. I cannot with a Cuda IV and a JB. I play games with the HL engine and the Q3 engine, again the difference is neglible. I save one or 2 secs, big deal.
Yea, i really dont do anything that stresses my harddrive. But I highly doubt 99.95% of the people do. I dont own a network server with traffic that can saturate my HDD's 24/7 nor do I transfer large files 24/7. But then again if I did, I wouldnt even bother with the JB and jump to SCSI.
And wow... your sole benchmark of how a drive is is by the almighty PCMark2002. I mean if it cant go over 1000, then geez, its not worth getting and must be slow!

Dude, grow up. Nobody told you you had to buy a good drive. To me, and I think most people on these boards, hard drive speed makes a big difference in what we do. If you're content with a quiet drive... by all means, buy the quietest drive you can get. I'm just saying, there's hardly a noticeable difference in the noise... but there IS a noticeable difference in the speed. If you don't notice the difference, congratulations, you don't need a new hard drive.

There was a VERY NOTICEABLE difference in noise between my WD 1000JB and my Barracuda V. The WD had a high-pitched whining sound at idle (ALL THE TIME) and a rather obnoxious seeking sound (just look up WD JB's in General Hardware and all you will see is complaints about HD whine). Considering that my machine is relatively quiet, that's all I could hear.
After switching to the Barracuda, I can't even hear the thing and there is NO performance diference whatsoever for what I do. Load times are the same, DIVX ripping is the same, everything is about the same. But the noise is MUCH less.

Ain't that the truth. I bought two of those "silent" Maxtors and I was SHOCKED to find out how loud they were! :|

I happily use two Seagate Barracuda IV's in my DAW. You know they're quiet when you can hear the PC Power & Cooling Silencer fans over them.![]()
