I don't think I'll be buying anything but Barracudas myself anymore, even the "quiet" drives from others aren't quiet in comparison. You do give up some performance by comparison, but still plenty fast.

Ain't that the truth. I bought two of those "silent" Maxtors and I was SHOCKED to find out how loud they were! :|

I Like Seagate's quailty, but every generation of the Barracuda has had seek times slower than the last. If this keeps up they'll be back in 5400RPM ground soon.

Yep, 'cuda IV here, can't even tell when they seek or read. Awesome drives from Seagate :).

Ya me too, went from WD1000JB to 120GB Barricuda V. O i love the silence, but the drive does get much hotter than the WD did.

I have a WD Caviar SE 80 GB... I don't think it's loud... but then again, I have 5 case fans not including the ones in the power supply, so maybe I don't notice it... but I did have a Seagate Baracuda IV... and I don't mean to start an argument... but it was a turd... slower than molases in January. Only difference in noise I noticed was I NEVER heard the Seagate read/write... and every once in a while after a large download where it transfers the file from a temp directory to the location I saved it in, I can hear the WD thrashing a litte... but I definately don't notice any hidiously loud noises.

I went from a 100JB to an 80GB Barracuda V. It's like night and day

And i'm sure DJ's dont mind the loud music either.

Its all perference, there has been a trend lately to develop ultra quiet systems, and Seagate has catered to that market. As for your slow as a turd remark, I think <puts on flame suit> its more or less of a placebo effect. I've used the mighty 8MB cache HDD's from Maxtor, and WD, and have not noticed any performance gains in everyday tasks.

Maybe you don't do anything that puts stress on the hard drive. In fact, I can almost say for sure you don't if you can't feel a difference in performance.

Another thing... show me a Baracuda IV that scores over 1000 in PCMark 2001... I dare you.

i've got 2 cuda iv's and a 1200jb... can't hear the cudas, can hear the jb seeks sometimes, but its not that much louder than the d740x it replaced.

Ooh, a single benchmark that you can get a high score on. Some of us don't want wind tunnels where we CAN'T tell the difference between drives, when there is in fact a significant noise difference. Then when we get everything else quieted down, that nasty rattling and squealing drive has to go, even if it's a little slower performance than the best drives available. For me, I was replacing older Maxtors that didn't perform significantly better anyway. Certainly you wouldn't throw out a WD 8MB cache drive for a Barracuda unless your entire focus was on noise and performance wasn't important, but if you're changing out an older drive, it makes sense to consider whether noise is important.

I can feel a difference between 5400rpm ATA33 drives and 7200 rpm Cuda IV's and 15K Cheetahs while using windows. I cannot with a Cuda IV and a JB. I play games with the HL engine and the Q3 engine, again the difference is neglible. I save one or 2 secs, big deal.

Yea, i really dont do anything that stresses my harddrive. But I highly doubt 99.95% of the people do. I dont own a network server with traffic that can saturate my HDD's 24/7 nor do I transfer large files 24/7. But then again if I did, I wouldnt even bother with the JB and jump to SCSI.

And wow... your sole benchmark of how a drive is is by the almighty PCMark2002. I mean if it cant go over 1000, then geez, its not worth getting and must be slow!

Just my two cents here. I have an 80Gig WD SE in a computer, and this one I use has a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80Gig and it also makes no noise at all. The other PC is relatively quiet and you CAN hear it 'thrash' a little sometimes but it is STILL not loud by any means. I wonder if some people sit with their cases open and sit by their PC with their ear plastered to the HD cage or something. However this 7200.7 is faster than my WD SE. I don't care about benchmarks, I can compare them side-by-side if I want and it loads everything faster than the WD SE and they are both kept in excellent condition. Oh yea, this Barracuda is only the 2meg cache version as well. Just my two cents on the matter.

Note: I have a 30.7Gig Maxtor as well, and that doesn't make any noise. Its about as loud as the WD SE is.

Dude, grow up. Nobody told you you had to buy a good drive. To me, and I think most people on these boards, hard drive speed makes a big difference in what we do. If you're content with a quiet drive... by all means, buy the quietest drive you can get. I'm just saying, there's hardly a noticeable difference in the noise... but there IS a noticeable difference in the speed. If you don't notice the difference, congratulations, you don't need a new hard drive.

There was a VERY NOTICEABLE difference in noise between my WD 1000JB and my Barracuda V. The WD had a high-pitched whining sound at idle (ALL THE TIME) and a rather obnoxious seeking sound (just look up WD JB's in General Hardware and all you will see is complaints about HD whine). Considering that my machine is relatively quiet, that's all I could hear.

After switching to the Barracuda, I can't even hear the thing and there is NO performance diference whatsoever for what I do. Load times are the same, DIVX ripping is the same, everything is about the same. But the noise is MUCH less.

Which "quiet" Maxtor did you get ? I got the 6Y080P0 (8 meg cache and fluid bearings) and I can hardly hear it in the noisiest of seeks. It is a little noisier than my Seagate, but not by much, and noticably faster than the Seagate.

I happily use two Seagate Barracuda IV's in my DAW. You know they're quiet when you can hear the PC Power & Cooling Silencer fans over them. :)

I thought my case fans were the problem until I went into "stand by" and saw that all my fans were running yet it was very quiet. My WD 800JB Caviar edition was making all the noise. Go into standby and you can hear your computer without the HD.
