Runs very hot in the enclosure due to bad ventilation. If you can't keep it cool somehow it's best to remove the drive and use it as an internal. The internal drive shows on Seagate's site as having a 2 year warranty.
 
zposter, do you have this drive...? / care to share some screenshots on temps readings you were getting? I picked it up anyway, I just plan on archiving home video so I will seldom need to have it running.
 
I have several of them. The temps easily get up to the low 50s (C) in a fairly cool environment. When the drive is removed and put in an enclosure with a fan it stays in the high 20s, low 30s during use.

I also ran into a big problem archiving video. Very often the files would drop bits or entire segments of data when using Windows Explorer or DOS copy. Sometimes all files would compare correctly, sometimes not. This happened on every drive in the enclosure, using USB 3.0 or 2.0. When the drive is removed and installed in a computer the files copy fine.

This appears to be a problem with Win7 and very large files (several GB and larger) being copied to external drives and is solved by using TeraCopy which bypasses Win7's buffering, but is also much slower.
 
Ah, I still haven't even gone to win7 yet. I'm still on the ol' Vista. Thanks for the info, i'll keep the temps in mind.
 
I wouldn't bet that Vista doesn't have the same large file issue. Definitely do filecompares on your copies.
 
What do you mean what brand? Seagate is a hard drive manufacturer.

And it's the DM model, 5900 RPM.
 
All I've received from Amazon are the Seagate ST4000DM000 (5900 RPM). I've read that the ones from Costco are the Seagate ST4000DX000 (7200 RPM).

I was under the impression that Seagate made some acquisitions including Samsung and perhaps they were using some Samsung drives in their enclosures. Don't act like its a big deal to ask that question as Western Digital puts Hitachi drives inside their 4tb My Book externals... Anyway thanks for the info.
 
Anybody try one of these on the usb port of a wifi router for data sharing or do the wifi routers with USB ports have 2tb limits? I would love to have this and a printer on my router.
