seagate 7200.7 or 7200.8

Last week I bought a 200GB seagate HD ST3200822A-RK (7200.7), but when I opened the box, I found it is ST3200826A, which is 7200.8. The lable on the box does not match the lable on the drive. I sent email to seagate and they have not got back to me yet.

My questions is that, should I keep this 7200.8? I guess this could cause warranty problem since the lable on the drive does not match my receipt. Or should I exchange the drive?

Thank you!

Check on seagates website with the SN that should be on the drive and make sure that it is under warranty. If it is, then keep it. 7200.8 > 7200.7

Thank you!

The S/N on the box and on the drive are the same, the P/N are different.

I just checked the warranty, with model# ST3200822A-RK, the drive is In Warranty Expiration 22-NOV-2010; with model # ST3200826A, the drive is Expiration Component, which was sold as a system component (Please contact your place of purchase for service).

It seems that I have to go back to CC for exchange.

BTW: I have heard that 7200.8 has some reliability problem and not as quiet as 7200.7, is this true?

since all HDD suck generally (too slow and fragile), and since there are only 2 mainline manuf left - seagate and WD (maxtor is now seagate), and since I do everything possible to prevent HDD loss, I only use .7's for now, no .8's or .9's. When perpedicular drives come out for DT, I may change then.
I have never lost a .7 and several IV's and V's I have are still working just fine after 3 years

Edit: "RK" just stands for Retail Kit. All drives in a retail kit (boxed) will just have the "A" designation on the drive label itself. There is no such thing as a drive label with RK.
I assume it came in sealed seagate box? Not a foil wrapper?
However, a different model in box is a bit fishy to say the least. I have bought a lot of seagate drives, never seen that. During the last BestBuy deal for .7 120GB drives, some people got .8's, but the number on box was correct to reflect that. The only thing I can think of is they ran out of .7's and figured the .8 was a step up anyways, and didnt want to miss a sale - because even .8's are actually obsolete now.

I would first use disc wizard to see if drive has been formatted/partitioned (used)

Sorry for OT- but do you know when the perpendicular DT drives are due out and how much faster do you think they will be?

The low RPM perp Laptop 160GB drive is already out in IBM StinkPad (>$300)
First review had kinda disappointing bm, but it was 5400 RPM - so 7200 is still a big unknown

First DT Perp drives seems to be at least another 3-4 months off

7200.7 were slower but were quieter and very reliable. the 7200.8, not so much.
