question is which is the better deal, this at $119 from newegg or the retail drives for $117 (free shippng) at frys? Retail has a 5 year warranty vs 3, and should be packaged better for shipping, but newegg has really good service/support.

Oh, I was not aware that the price dropped to $117 with FS. I would definitely go retail. The + 2 years is worth any inconvenience you may have with the initial purchase.

Do you have a link for the Fry's drive? I didn't see it one their site.

Has Seagate fixed all the firmware issues?

kmmatney http://shop3.frys.com/product/5803213,

as to the fixed firmware I am not sure if everythign is resolved, some say the new firmware fixed everything others... I am probably picking up 4 of these (or of the wd green) for a raid 5 array in the next day or so, was going to go with the greens (even though they are slower) because of the past issues with the seagate, but at this price it is a difficult decision.

would actually prefer the 3 year warranty (buy with amex, after 3 years I would rather get money back then have to deal with waiting for a replacement of an out dated drive (probably will have 3-4 tb drives for the same price in 3 years)). But a large number of the failures seem to be due to poor packaging of the oem drives from newegg/amazon (just buble wrap in box, no foam coffin), so ...

I have a dead one sitting here.....waiting till they figure this drive out before my 2nd RMA.

did you do a bios update from seagate? supposedly fixed the bricked drive.

I haven't had any trouble out of my two, that being said I would go for the retail with the longer warranty if you can.

As per the other thread. I got one and it started clicking within a few days.

Got the replacement and within a month (2 days before return period) it started clicking AGAIN. Good thing I noticed it now because it never seemed to show up until I hit the 3GB mark. I can only imagine it getting worse as more data gets written. I thought I'd be one of the lucky ones, unfortunately that is not the case. I recommend to stay far away from these drives. Decided to stop trying to get 'lucky' and ordered the WD Caviar Green 1.5TB today, even if it's a lot more expensive. That and the fact 1.5TB is a lot of data being lost to chance it on these massive failure rates.

The clicking is not a BIOS issue but a mechanical problem that doesn't seem to be resolved. The BIOS issues were just another piece of the pain in the ass puzzle. So long Seagate. 🙁
