The purchasers really need a "special" controller to get the max benefit from these drives.
See below:

excerpted from the link that "rsales" posted:

Note: Without the presence of an Ultra2 SCSI (LVD) controller, the Ultra2 SCSI (LVD) behaves as a standard SCSI or Ultra SCSI device, limiting its performance benefits.

It's not special - all modern controllers are LVD. It's just another name for U2W. The drives will work on older UW controllers, but only at 40MB/s of course.

LVD is a different method of singaling (uses two lines/signal instead of one). LVD is required for both Ultra 2 Wide (U2W) and Ultra 160 (U160) SCSI modes. Much like UDMA-66 or UDMA-100, any LVD device can fall back to SCSI II or Ultra SCSI(UW) modes if the controller does not support LVD signaling. The differences between the LVD modes and the "normal" (Single-Ended) modes are speed and cable length.

For example:
SCSI II: 10MB/s
SCSI II Wide: 20MB/s
Ultra SCSI: 20MB/s
Ultra Wide SCSI: 40MB/s
Ultra 2 Wide: 80MB/s
Ultra 160: 160MB/s

Usually Ultra Wide SCSI supports only 1.5 meters or so. LVD modes extend this quite a bit.

So yes, U2W works on most SCSI II or newer controllers. If you have only a 1 or 2 internal drives you usually do not need a LVD controller. A Ultra Wide controller will suffice for most cases - much like UDMA-100 does nothing for current IDE drives.

Also, while most 10K RPM drives are faster than 7200s, the generation of the drive sometimes matters more than the spindle speed. If you don't believe me, check out Quantum and compare the 10K "Atlas 10K" and the 7.2K "Atlas V":

yeah, i wasnt going to buy one until morning since i was getting tired. The stock started w/ only 85 of em. I hit refresh and it was down to 65, so i decided to purchase one. Once i was done, i went back and it was @ 40 something, i hit refresh again, and they were sold out. Someone must of boughten all of em, or people just bought em all @ the same time. But anyways, I think i ordered the right parts to get everything to run in LVD mode. I got myself a Adaptec 2640u2b, $79.99, a 22" 3 connecter scsi cable w/ LVD terminator, $25, and a 68 pin >> 80pin convertor, $10. Hopefully this will all work :)

Would of and should of gotten one, but it only does 80megs per sec while my controller does dual 160 megs per sec so I passed. Currently have 2 IBM 15k rpm 36 gig each @ 3ms in RAID but two of the 50 gigs could of been a nice addition.

Has anyone had one of these shipped yet? I am getting concerned. The last deal of the day I got in on, the Radeon Vivo is on back order, and this drive still says sent to warehouse. You would think they would have the DOTDs in stock with the real time quantity on hand clicker and all.

Damn, it just switched to "on order", and I just got the special scsi card in from the compgeeks.
They still had quite a few left when I hit transmit. This could be bad news :[

I'm Doomed!! I meant Buy Com changed my order status from "Sent to Warehouse" to "On Order". I sent buy.com an email and they answered just now that they did not have any more drives and were cancelling my order. This despite the fact that they accepted it originally and were showing some left when I was done. I am screwed because I trusted they would have the DOTD in stock and ordered an Ultra 2 LVD scsi card from compgeeks for the thing. Now I have nothing to use it for. $80 down the drain, or return the card for a restocking fee. Anyone want to take pity and sell me their drive???
