This past Sunday, I visited my local Fry's store in Austin. The 300GB S-ATA (16MB cash, yadda yadda) Seagate drive that they had was posted at $139.99 and the people there confirmed it withh their computers and crap that it was $139.99 and that I would only get the $79.99 on the IDE drives. They tried to peddle the Maxtor drive to me, but it was only an SATA/150 and I think it even only had 8MB cache. So, I went ahead and just bought the 300 GB IDE since I don't think I'd notice the difference in the first place (I'm not running a server farm or anything like that).

It's regional then because I was at a Fry's here this morning and the prices were the same for 300GB PATA and SATA. It will all change tomorrow of course.

I received mine today.
At first, I was happy to see that the drive inside the box was 7200.10. But, then, I realized that the part number and the model number on the box do not match those on the drive (the serial numbers are the same). I guess that is expected since the box is for 7200.9.

I always check the warranty status as soon as I buy a drive. So, I went to the Seagate web site and checked the warranty. http://support.seagate.com/customer/warranty_validation.jsp

When I entered the numbers from the drive, I got this:

The product you identified was sold as a system component. Please contact your place of purchase for service. Seagate sells many drives to direct OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers. These products are usually configured for the OEMs only, as components for their systems. You must contact your place of purchase for any warranty support on these drives.
If you purchased this unit directly from Seagate, please return to the previous page and verify your Seagate customer number, because the customer number you entered () does not match our records.

Then, I entered the numbers from the box and got 2011 as the expiry date for the warranty. This is what I expected. But, the problem is that if some day I need warranty service, Seagate will receive the drive and will check the numbers that are on the drive.

I have contacted Seagate by email and am waiting for a reply.

You could always order the Maxtor from Staples, pricematch to Outpost, maybe use coupons...

Staples has it for 139
Outpost has it for 74
So with the 110% it would be 74.99 -6.60- any coupon + tax.
I got it for around $70.00 after tax no rebate involved... If only I could find a coupon.

Navid, Seagate has had this problem before with warranty and have fixed it for people.

Got a question for those who have received 7200.10 drives - are your drives 300GB or 320GB?
